A small thing about the scathis...

Postby lapantouflemagic » 01 Dec 2017, 17:18

hi everyone ! i'm kind of new here, at least on the forums, i've been playing FAF since quite a few years now, but there was periods where i stopped playing for one year or so, whatever.

well, while i'm at it, i'd like to say thanks, and congratulations for the great work on balancing and improvements on the game.

so, long story short, i essentially play cybran on multiplayer maps (love dual gap  ), and as someone said in a different topic, it's kind of hard to end the game with only crabs and spiders, because the scathis is garbage, and in my understanding, if you can win with a soul ripper, something's wrong with your game.

anyway, i played a crazy game a couple of days ago, where i at last managed to build a scathis for the lulz, the opponent's bases were crumbling. i obviously build it underwater, an i knew it couldn't fire from there, but when someone asked if it could... well, that made me realize that it totally should !

i mean, we all know how crabs and fatboys can fire their main canons as long as the turrets are out of the water, even if pretty much everything else is still kissing the fishes, same for the galactic colossus (i assume, didn't check), bricks, percival and so on. So considering how long the scathis' cannons are when deployed, provided that the water is shallow enough, shouldn't it be able to fire from underwater ?

i think that would be a really neat trick, it would still be pretty easy to kill if you don't control the sea anyway, and even if you do, you also need a decent amount of anti-air/anti-torpedo to prevent a murder by T2 torp bombers, and if you don't... well the cybrans at last get a decent game ender.

And finally, i ran a few tests, and it can fire from "underwater" if it's in very veeeeeery shallow water, basically a puddle. so i think the issue is more that when the cannons are not deployed, the firing point is so low that it sees itself as submerged if you're more than wheel-deep in the sea. because of that, it *thinks* it's unable to fire, but if it were to deploy, then it would be totally fine.

so long story short, if someone can try to change just one setting being the scathis deploying its cannon even when idle (not while moving, that would look silly) i'd say that you could send it somewhere near the enemy base, wait for it to arrive, go idle, and oh ! i can wreck stuff !

I think Scathis could use a buff. Possibly a cloak while not deployed (in exchange for some health or damage), or at the very least stealth.

well, it depends, as i wrote in the first post, maybe it is meant to be able to, but can't because something was not coded carefully enough =)

the scathis used to have insane range (comparable with the mavor iirc) so my guess is that the gpg devs didn't intend it to be able to shoot while being under water

stealth won't help you can already stealth it with a deceiver for pretty much no cost

imo the issue is not that the scathis is not a great tool on dual gap but the fact that dual gap is not a good map

Well the scathis generally isn't a good tool on good maps either
