ACU: Who uses it and why?

Seems to me like the ACU is super underpowered. One time I died to a single GC. Who would have thought a 28,000 mass unit could take down an ACU. This is clearly heavily imbalanced and I am really angry at Zock for not fixing it faster. I am also angry at Sheeo for no other reason than that seems to be fashionable lately.

If someone with 500x more experience with ACUs comes to this thread and tells me I'm wrong I will just find someone really inarticulate to try and argue against them while I throw in the occasional comment. He will articulate himself so badly that nobody will be able to counter his arguments because they don't have any idea what he's saying.

Well generally speaking I usually try to get one ACU in all of my games. It is very handy, because it allows you to build a base on distant worlds - which would otherwise be impossible. Usually, I find that my opponent happens to be in an ACU as well. What's with this? Does no one use spaceships anymore?
