Theme to losing

Postby Flynn » 06 Apr 2015, 16:15

Well Softly said two things that stick in my mind in terms of advice for getting better at SupCom.

1. Look for a consistent theme as to why you lose.

2. Find out what the enemy does to win the game.

I will be talking about point 1 in this thread. I think the reason that I lose is that I forget to do stuff, e.g. if I change my engineer factory to make raiding units in the first few minutes of the game I then forget to change it back to make build capacity so that when I start getting mass I go back to my engineer factory expecting to see engineers there to start pgen and factory spam but I don't have any engineers instead a group of tanks and scouts.

And in other games I forget to use walls, or I forget to reclaim, or forget to eco and so on. In about 3.5k games including customs I just can't seem to find a way of remembering these things. Whenever guys watch my replays it is the same old stuff over and over again, they point out the same old mistakes which I know I shouldn't make in theory but in practice I always make them and seemingly always will.

Does anyone else suffer from the "forgetfulness" problem?

Mhm, I used to have this problem. I'd either forget to eco, or make radar, or some other silly stuff. I solved it by putting post-its next to my screen so I would remember, eventually I stopped forgetting. Now I want to do a hundred things at once, but have to choose which ones to execute because im too slow :D

"the ditch - f*** mexes"
"ISIS- mid reclaim, shiny t3 mex button"
"Frozen isis - No mid reclaim, eyes hurt."

etc etc etc

I made a google doc with all the things I teach newbies. Teaching people is a good way to solidify what you yourself know. Maybe try and get some irl friends into the game and teach them how to play?

Having documents is good, but unless you have it available and ready at go time, it doesn't really help you remember anything (IMO). Like studying for a test in the same seat you take it in, the best to practice these things is to... well, practice them.

Or sticky notes. I like the sticky notes idea.

I once make a suggestion about a "checkbox" mod that would remind you to do things, and you could check them off as you went. It was to include timers as well, so for instance, the reminder to build nuke def wouldn't pop up until 20 minutes in. All customizable too. It got shot down horribly because people thought it would be too cheaty. Also, while I've no doubt I possess the skill to code such a thing, it's a big project to take on given my other IRL commitments.

I had a friend who used a checklist app on his phone.

Note -- the above assumes you have only one screen. If you have two, go for the doc.

There is a lot to remember though. I sympathize. I think we've all gotten to 15:00, had our opponents give us a huge mass dump, and then started swearing profusely because we didn't have any engineers with which to reclaim it. The human brain is a finicky thing.
