i think it needs to be nearly-symmetrical otherwise one side will be more protected than the other from navy.

even in you symmetric views maybe the seas need to be bigger for nice naval action.

i don't think having symetrical is needed. It's just an easy way to balance a map.

but your former map look more interesting to play than the other imo

Global ground mapping...

I used Google maps and toshop to extract different stratums... so close to the real ground :)
