Defining impassable terrain?

Postby Lionhardt » 02 Sep 2013, 08:24

I would like to know if it is posible to define terrain as impassable, that would otherwise be passable, like slopes, that are not too steep enough for units not to to be able to climb it, eventhough they are not supposed to climb these.

I do not know enough about the terrain to provide help on this, but I have a question as to why you would want this. If the terrain appears to the player as it is capable of units moving across the area, are you going to place something, whatever it may be (decal, prop, etc.) to indicate to the player that the area is impassable?

Yea, those are cliffs that are just not steep enough.

Use the elevation, sharp and blur tools + the slope view

Sure, but I meant a way other than making the terrain actually impassable due to its morphology. From other map editor I know this tool. You could just paint the terrain as impassable wherever you wanted.

For example, did you know, on Open Palms you can move and build at the outer most edges of the mountains, where the snow lies? These arrays certainly were not meant to be playable terrain by the mapper. Nobody ever goes there anyway... but if the mapper (could) have made those areas impassable, he would have the guarantee people would play the map as intended. I guess most people assume anyway, that these areas are impassable, if they didn’t they would go there more often to build hidden factories etc. So why not make those areas indeed impassable, when the map layout already suggests that they are not meant to count as playable area? You see where I'm coming from?

Btw. is there a shortcut for activating and deactivating the slope overlay? It's annyoing as hell , to constanly go View/Debug/Slope, as it does not correctly refresh when you don't switch it on and off...

These arrays certainly were not meant to be playable terrain by the mapper.

I'm not sure if that is true. It at least is also not that they were meant to be unplayable. The SupCom maps have one general idea in mind: everything that is flat enough is buildable, everything that is accessible because it's not too steep for tanks and bots to drive upwards, you can go there.

If you don't want it buildable or accessible, make a mountain or a ridge or a cliff. Other than accessibility by slope, there are only two terrain types: land and water.

In the map editor you can "Paint" terrain types. I have no idea what these aactually do or what effect they have accept for lava. paint an area lava and you can build OR move on it. There is no option for Move only and not build unless someone knows how to create a custom terrain type or set variables for existing terrain types. I only would recommend doing this to fix glitches in your map (example a cliff that is passable but should not be. If you use natural terrain to accomplish this players will have an easier time I think telling where and what they can do.
