random map generator

Postby Golol » 19 Mar 2013, 17:21

I dint know anything about mapping.
And i dont know anything about coding.
Well would it be possible to create a map generator?
You set a number of players and a map size.
then the map generator places half of the players randomly, and randomly sets the usal 4 mexes around them + the hc. then it randomly spawns some mexes all over the place.
in the next step there are random hills and water created (will be complicated) and then the map will get doubled or something like that so the map is symetric.
i dont demand anything.
but would that be possible? and could someone create this?
i think it'd be very cool for random 1n1s and so on.
for sure, if a map is good you should be able to save it

Would be beyond epic for ranked games. Show true freestyle skill to separate the men from the boys.

people have come up with this idea a long time go, yet, nobody coded it
and i personally say it's quite impossible to auto-create a decent map

Sure it will never be perfect, but it sure would make it fun to play a different game every time you port in. Brings back very fond memories of X cup in F-Zero-X.

Well, I just popped open the map maker a few days ago, and it seems it wouldn't be too hard to make a symmetric map.

First a biome would be picked to determine the map type, then would be procedural, first a terrain pass to give the map texture, then some passes for hills, then for plateaus, then mountains, then ramps. Then you would add forestry and decals, and do a pass for strata texturing based on the difference in height from on point to another, as well as locations. Water height could be based on biome and average terrain height, for example, a swamp would be flat with hilly areas and relatively high water height, while a desert would have low water level for an oasis on occasion.

I would suggest a working map editor before someone starts to develop a random map generator.
