My first selfmade map

Postby FlyingThunder » 03 Sep 2016, 16:19

Hey there, a few days ago i was playing around with the hazard map maker and now, having put a few hours into my first actuall attempt, id like some suggestions and/or critic from you guys around here. note that the map is not in its final state and im not absolutely happy with it, and i did not test it with other players at all yet, only with AI. what im still planing to do is more detailing with trees and rocks (rocks look pretty shitty as i think in this version), maybe some civs in the middle or on the edges (nothing too big) or some wreckage. im still also thinking about changing the size to 20x20 because i sometimes got the feel it would be too crowded, but anyways thats for you to (hopefully) decide. id be grateful for constructive critics or help with how i could make it better, feel free to tell me whatever you think of whatever aspect.

finally, im getting a microsoft framework error everytime i try to open "level options" in hazards editor under "edit" tab. anyone knows what this is caused by? i also cannot open maps that i edit with the original supcom editor in hazards editor, but thats not such a big deal (except for the fact that i have no idea how to add civs/wreckage on haz. editor)

well, enough of that. heres the map, im looking forward to some replies

Mapmaking is good, I'll test the map today.
Don't complain about that which you aren't willing to change.

:?: What is the idea behind this layout? Not even the mexes are distributed fairly.

the mexes are fair? every player has 8 mexes in direct reach, 2 mexes that can only be reached by drop and there are 2 mexes and a hydro in the middle between each player, and im planing to do more stuff to fight for on the center island or between the players (tho i still feel the map is a little too small for that)

would you explain to me why you feel its imbalanced? and to test this, would it be a good idea to let some bots play against each other and see which position wins the most?

The layout is not fair. For some players the mexes are further apart or further away from spawn than for others. Furthermore the overall mex layout does not talk to the player. Mex layout should guide the flow of a game. This layout looks utterly random.

Also lanes. Good maps have lanes. Lanes make the game somewhat predictable. Your map has too few lanes. Basically just one.

yea, that was my whole point of it being too small for multiple paths. also, i really wanted to make a map that is NOT symetrical but still balanced, and the arty stuff is one thing i didnt consider at all (i still dton think its much of an impact on the gameplay) i think if i stay with this layout i will remove the water and reposition the mexes, but i think ill just start from scratch and try something more easily balanceable at first.

Make sure to check this: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=13014 out too. I made a couple of videos how to make a map with adaptive spawns and stuff, so if you are interested pm me in the lobby (I wont be here before tuesday 13.9.). You could also join the mapping team that improves on the already existing maps from the ultimate series (by making them look better, adding optional reclaim, civilians...) if you like.
Check out the next level of maps: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=13014
For adaptivity, customizability and less clutter in the vault.
