Strange water behaviour.

Postby Jip » 12 Jul 2015, 22:36

Hello people,

I'm new here and I've been working on a map called Auralian - The Core.
The map is a 1 v 1 map with water on the sides, however the water suddenly got bugged out.

In the map editor, the water looks fine:

Water correctly within the editor.

However, ingame the water is... well, different:

People I've playtested the map with (I first thought it may be something local due to a custom texture pack that I'm using (battlefeel)) didn't had any water at all, which is even more weird.

Did anyone happen to came across this issue?
And more imporantly, on how to fix it?

My water settings can be reviewed in the map editor screenshot.

Lots of love,
Jip

Thanks Speed2!

That fixed it.
Strange bug though, why would you allow higher differences if there is a limit to it?

I've had that happen to me with a few maps I've gotten from the vault. Turning off the factional map boarder seems to fix it. Perhaps the game has a few different depth boarders it can use, and sometimes guesses the wrong one?

Now when we know what causes it, he can fix it while making his map. Thats harder for alreardy existing maps.

True, but the fix isn't map breaking. It just leaves a strange corner in the map.
Or am I seeing something wrong?

So far I know Balvery Mountains and Staircase Mountains also cause things to go black.

I think that it's how the supcom game decides to place its boarder. Since you have high cliffs and low sea floor on the edges of your map it decides to line things up with the highest point. Maps with uniform edges, and mountains that aren't on the edges seem to avoid the issue. I don't know how to prove this is what's happening, though.

Perhaps one could create a simple map with a single mountain in the middle, with a huge height difference from the uniform edge around and see if that triggers it, and then do the same with an inverted mountain/abyss. Then try some sort of horseshoe pattern to see if the problem can be triggered that way.

How hard is it to make a map and test it? I might give it a shot to investigate.
