i dont know if this is already proposed but since on the galaxy map proposes the map is still splitted in 4 parts i dont think it is planned to be implemented.
how about the map is splitted into "islands" with idk depending on the size of the galaxy 5-6 or whatever 10-20 planets, so the whole galaxy is like a pattern of islands and each faction has like 4-5 islands that are spread over the map.
that would add a lot of tactical gameplay because for example cybran can try to capture the planets surrounding an aeon group of 13 planets and then start capturing these planets. instead of just shifting fronts like if the start areas are preset, the cybran will be able to slowly gain the whole area and when the last planet of the island is captured the aeon cant easily get it back.
it should be taken care that when the random islands are randomly generated, the islands of each faction are evenly spread out so no faction has luck and has a supercluster of 30 planets what would give it a real advantage.
just to make sure: with islands i dont mean that there are 20 planets with only 1 or 2 connections to the other planets. the planets and connections are evenly spread out. there are just color islands that indicate which faction owns the area
