noticing 2 things when having connection issues:

1: The game is stuck in "setting up automatch"
- this needs some kind (any kind) of resolution, as it may be quite common

2: when canceling the automatch, i can see my opponents real name
(Hi Lux! Really happy that match didn't happen... ;-)

There is a resolution : The proxy server.
It was designed for GW, it's in place for months and works perfectly for 1v1 and 2v2.

You should NEVER be stuck in that screen. The causes are :
- The other player is downloading the GW featured mod.
- The other player is downloading the map.
- The other player has a slow HDD and FA load slowly.
- The other player has connection problems and you need to wait for the proxy server to kick in (about 15 sec).

And you didn't wait long enough.

Or
- The other player (or you) has a firewall blocking the proxy server (unlikely).
- The other player canceled.
- There is a bug.

So, in short, you have to wait long enough, you need to activate game logs(check tech forum), and you need to report ANY problem. This is a problem that shouldn't happen if both player wait long enough.

I'm hoping to get two reports each time it happen so I can fix it, but I think I dream a lot :)

Why ? Did you see a popup saying that you can't connect to him? That he left his game ?
You need to be REALLY precise when reporting an issue or I really can't do anything about it.

Hm.. Right, precise, I'll try again.

Game is stuck in "setting up automatch". Waiting for 10+ minutes does not resolve the issue. When finally pressing cancel, I get the "Notice from server| You had trouble connecting to some player(s): TAG_Chosen".

I also had this with Lu_Xun today, so that's two Seraphim scumbags unveiled ! :-p. You can also see a players' real ID in the replay vault. Case in point: Replay UID 910341 Kietay(1117) vs Lu_Xun_17(2360) 2013-05-12 start time 11:43.

During the wait, I get (several) ForgedAlliance.exe popups: "Another instance of FA is already running". I'm assuming that's another (or the same) player trying to defend a planet I'm attacking.

Last friday morning (EST), I played three games with Lu_Xun without problem (aside from getting my ass kicked ;-) ), both defending and attacking. These games do not appear to be in the replay vault, but there is one from yesterday (UID 907458, more sorebutt). There's also one from this morning (UID 910228), but that time Lu_Xun disconnected (victory at last! :twisted: ) and reported an "epic crash" in the lobby. The problems where there before that game, so its not impossible for me to start a game through GW.


Now, I get stuck connecting A LOT, so never say never. It's not usually in automatch because I don't play ladder games; I rarely play 1v1 or 2v2 as well. What I usually do when having an issue is wait, cancel, then change my port number and try again. This mostly works and after I get into the game, there's usually no further issue.

If I don't change the port number, I wont be able to join any game for the remainder of the day (or a shorter period I haven't figured out). Restarting faf does not help (but since a fef updates ago I do get a message about some udp port error). Restarting my comp does not help. (Port forwarding does not work for me, but that's faf-unrelated.) All this leads me to believe that there's some issue with faf thinking the port is occupied. I can work around it now, so I live with it. Because of this though, I almost gave up on faf, its due to FA being so amazing that I'm still here.

I'll try to do better (sheez, this debugging stuff is hard work even if you're not the one doing it...). I didn't have save game logs enabled (do now), but the "forever" file does not seem to be wiped on a restart, so i do have that, but it's like 4 times the allowed maximum length of a post. I'll mail it to [email protected].

I'll also refrain from logging into GW for now, this must be very annoying for the other players.

In the log you sent me, you've waited like 7 seconds.
I don't see any "port used" in the logs, and your uPnP does not work. Don't use it, and check your firewall.

Try this :
- Defend ONE planet. Not attack.
- Wait for the game to launch OR the "you win" popup to display. DONT DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL ONE OF THESE TWO EVENTS OCCURS.
- If you get the "you win", try again.
- If the game launch, wait AT LEAST 60 seconds once you see the connection screen.

If the game did not launch after 60 seconds, post faforever.log AND game.log (both are equally important) here. Don't mail me, I can't keep track of what is what.
You can either use pastebin or attach the files if they are too big.

If it connect to someone, please post "it worked !" so at least I know. If it worked, tell me if you had the "you did not connect to ..." at the end.

And the other 6 or 7 times I was stuck? If they all say 7 seconds, the log is wrong.

Not sure how one "checks" a firewall. Not using an external one, so just the windows thing. It seems to give permission to FAF and FA (4 times, not sure why theres 4). Wasn't using uPnP all the time, just the last few times.

I´ll try the other stuff.

Please don't try other stuff, just do the steps I've told you, without uPnP.
Disable the windows firewall first (don't worry, you won't die without a firewall for some minutes).

The proxy message warning that there is a connection issue should put the GW name instead of the real FAF user name. Is it possible?

OK.. Did as you suggested. Well, almost.
First attempt was a bust, got the you win message.

Second attempt was as described. That is, I clicked defend, but aside from a small window flashing by and dissapearing on my screen, nothing happened, so I clicked defend again. This time, FAF started, stuck on connecting for like 90s, then I gave up.
