Galactic War - Trailer

Okay, UEF is Unity, yes, and Cybran is Freedom. Seraphim, however, is Revenge (remember, the old Earth Empire killed a Seraphim colony) and Aeon isn't "Clarity" it is, if anything, "Purity". The Nomads don't have nearly as well-developed a backstory, but I'd go with "Survival".

Everyone is opposed to the Nomads being 'Survive'. They have a fleet several-hundred ships strong, with a ton of elite commanders and a very effective army. They also have orbital bombardment weapons and enough munitions and resources to literally glass a planet. Also, they are a NOMADIC faction, they don't stay on one place at once, and for them that implies that when they aren't chillin' at their fleet, drinking up a storm, they are KILLING THINGS.

In addition to this, none of the other factions have weapons that can come close to scratching their fleet, because the last time they had to face a major incursion of space-ships was towards the beginning of the infinite war. Past that it was all Commanders and quantum tunneling.

Maybe Pillage suits Nomads well.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/nomad

1. A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.

in english nomad has the connotation of enduring in spite of changing environments, e.g. the siberian nomads who are still living the same way their people have been for centuries, following herds and trying to survive harsh conditions. Or the arabian nomadic tribes which also lived under similarly difficult circumstance; generally nomads have not adapted agriculture. Nomad connotes difficulty surviving hence a lack of settlement - if it was no trouble to survive then nomadic cities would spring up and the people would stop being called nomadic. That's why survival/endure come to people's mind. I don't know if this connotation exists in other languages - it would be good if there was a backstory explanation for why the nomads had to move around besides just reaving other people's shit, which makes them more vikings than nomads.

edit: Zaphon would be right, pillage or ravage or reave would all be more apropos unless the backstory was elucidated

'Nomad' describes their mode of transport. And it is a very good description; nobody can catch their fleet because nobody has similar technology. It is an entirely different means of getting around, if I remember correctly the excuse was either that it was a form of quantum manipulation, or something to do with gravity. They only garnered this name because of their way of getting around.

Also, it sounds unique. It's only been used once or twice before in a sci-fi setting, and it sounds a lot better than "Space Vikings" or "Marauders," which both sound cliche as all f***.

So yeah, the Nomads do endure and survive, but they also prosper and kick ass at the same time. My vote is for Revenge, assuming the Seraphim don't get that, otherwise they should be a viking-ey word.

if that is the reason they're called the nomads it doesn't really translate in english. i read the wiki and it says they have FTL technology. what would be more apropos is something like "Reavers" but that's pretty Firefly-ish, although not a bad thing.

I'm just saying it seems like the backstory and all that should be cleared up on the nomads before they're finished because as nice of a name as that is for a faction name, it just doesn't fit the story or themes. Maybe if the story was they could not understand Gate technology and so HAD to keep moving around the galaxy looking for fuel for their FTL drives - lest they get stranded again - the name would fit. Then the whole Nomads/Pirates/Vikings inconsistency would be resolved.

Nomads is a perfectly correct English description,

no·mad (nmd)
n.
1. A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.
2. A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

They do have a backstory, and its a perfectly plausible one, by which I mean its no less implausible than Seraphim breaking into our reality from a quantum realm.

I must say I personally do not see any inconsistencies.

why do they have no fixed residence - nomads don't have homeworlds?

The Nomads kept raiding the systems in their spiral arm of the galaxy increasing their numbers and strength and nurturing their wrath on the successors of the old Earth Empire. After traveling a millennia the Nomads are at the doorstep of their old foes

from the wiki, wrath might be pretty good for nomads story aside

otherwise wrath would be good for seraphim too
