[Mockup] Find Games

Postby Dragonfire » 29 Oct 2014, 22:38

I try to redesign all lobby tabs and started with the "Find Games" tab.
In the new UI I decide to put ALL games in one tab, Maybe later this condition is false.
Based on that I clean up the hosted games:

  • map name gone (You have the preview and see the name on the tooltipp, also you can download or jump to the vault entry of the map via context menu)
  • mod is gone (You have a icon for that and you must hover or use the search function)
  • visual rating under the balance (not in the title)
  • a symbol shows you the unit restrictions
  • you can hide password games
  • you can sort
  • you can search
  • OPTIONAL: You can group games into features mods and hide/show them (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ddfv6y9iqe3y0 ... n.png?dl=0)

If you visit the tab the first time:

If you press the "host game" button, "host" button in the "Features Mods" widget or double click on it:

first draft, with complete "host game" assistent
(but with map name, without left widgets, other position of game info icons and context menus):

Another idea is a "match detail" panel, to provide more informations and interaction possiblitiy:

One of the main idea of the FAF interface is that you are, at most, 2 clicks away of ANY function you need. You have added at least one additional click for every major function :-/

It is a tradeoff between a minimal interface and show system status/minimal user interactions.
If you provide a shortcut (per defualt) for everyone, like in my first drafts, you have a lot of stuff.
If you hide things, you need more clicks/tooltipps.

You can counteract this, e.g. with customization (user can define shortcuts, have a sidebar at the right ...) or wirh different views ...
In the end it is personal prefer ...

Given the current size (and format) of displays these days, I'm not sure if "compacting" it is really necessary. Unless you want to run it on a smartphone of course.

I'm really not a fan of encumbered interfaces : They look messy, and it's easier to miss-click.

I would prefer some development to enhance the theming capabilities, making these kind of custom themes possible to make (and as the "default" layout is actually a theme, you can even pack the .exe with different default flavors), instead of re-vamping the whole interface.

I personally would hate to have to make some work to go back to a more direct approach.

I kept the default interface minimal because theming was allowing more complex ones, that are certainly a personal taste.

(Thanks to @spooky)

Rectangle is for filtering and sorting (flow indicate non default view)
