Looking for a certain flavor of heavy PD

Postby stardust » 23 May 2018, 01:41

Howdy folks!

I've been tinkering with the idea of a naval units battlepack for some time, but only recently have I put nose to grindstone and gotten anything done. Sprouto over on the LOUD Project's discord server has given me some pointers and answered a couple questions I had, and have something for myself that seems to work very nicely. I have expanded the naval tech tree of all four factions a fair bit by borrowing units from various mods - the Antares unitpack, Future Battlefield and Xtreme Wars in particular, with a handful from others, such as the Blackops series of mods. Works nice!

So now I have all these cool awesome warships, to appease my inner admiral, at least until a space mod really takes off ala TA Final Frontier style. However, with all this mobile firepower, there's not much in the way of counters aside from masses of T2 artillery, a combat air patrol, and garrison units. I was thinking back to Total Annihilation - the Core had a Doomsday Machine structure that had a big powerful and fairly long-range heavy laser, and a medium and light laser for close-in work. Has anyone ever put any thought into a heavy defensive T3 structure for each faction that has more than a single weapon on it? Like a garrison structure of some sort. Something that would allow it to fend off a variety of units at once, but can still be brought down by, say, a concentrated airstrike or cruise missiles? Total Mayhem has a Perses, but for some reason the guns on it don't fire. There was another one I remember playing with, but can't find it now... may have been in LOUD mod. But both of those were UEF. From a balance standpoint, it could be quite expensive and/or time-consuming to build, and perhaps eve not be able to be built too close to one another.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Not YET, but I fully intend to, if I ever put it out there. I can't take credit for any of their work, that's not how I roll. All I'm doing is collecting various units into a single mod package. Fear not! I ain't one to steal others' works.

i'm curious, what would happen if you use an unit without asking or after negative answer ?
especially when you don't do it in order to "take the credit instead of someone else", but as if you take FAF as an open-source project (and re-use work of other, to improve FAF overall).

@keyser:

that's simple. If you steal my work you have to deal with my lawyer.
Your mod/map/work with stolen content will be deleted from the vault/forum and your account will be banned.

It also doesn't matter if you write "unit x is from Autor y".
It's the same then stealing a car and write on the roof "This cas was stolen from Mr.xyz"
Do you think its ok to drive it now ?

FAF is a open source project, but mods are not.

hmm i've already took a map from the vault (wonder) changed it, and upload it (wonder NA).
which make me a thief, i guess i should be banned then.

also you analogy is not correct, it would me more : you build the car from scratch. I look at it, like it, then i use my superpower and duplicate it. Then i change it a bit, i tweak it, and i put a sign on it : free to use. So everybody can drive with it.

edit : i'm also curious, as of why you do a mod. Is it in the intend to sell it (in which case i can understand you don't want people to copy it), in the intend to get fame/hype (same), in the intend to have fun (because you like coding mod) or in intend to improve FAF overall by giving people 1 more tool to play with and improve it ?
also i can understand that you don't want your unit to end up into the latest "nAzy ReWorK mOd", but i guess it would be banned anyway.

Duly noted, thank you.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Seeing as I'm only tinkering for my own enjoyment at this point.
