Engineer assist, bumping and simspeed

Postby Col_Walter_Kurtz » 20 Jan 2015, 18:02

So it seems that one of the big reasons for simpeed issues is the massive assist by T1 engineers on factories. BRINK said he confirmed this by ctrl-k'ing all T1 engineers and simspeed jumped from -2 to 0 or something in that order.

Then I saw this video by ZLO in which he shows what happens when you assist ground with engineers. They stop colliding and playing bumpercars. They also align perfectly:

Now perhaps there isn't a direct connection between engineers bumping into each other / pathfinding and simspeed. But just making them never collide seems like a good idea anyway. Bumping engineers are probably the biggest annoyance in the game, considerably slowing your expansion. And just image if it would increase the simspeed by one or two points as well.

there is no link between bumpin and simspeed.

though making engie not bumping into each other can be a real interesting improvement.
make it like the mineral trick of starcraft 2, where drone (probe...) can get through unit to collect the blue mineral.

I take a lot of time to be able to use a T3 engie from a T3 air heavy assited. Sometime, the engie stop try to get to the move order because there is too much other engie on the way.

Exactly! And if the assisting is a separate simspeed problem, having them not run into each other anymore can only do good for the simpeed I suppose. Pathfinding does impact simpseed significantly AFAIK.

This is a very old topic. ZeP didn't want to remove the bumping of engies. As i remember he never reasoned his stance exactly.
(Don't take me by word, i'm old and i tend to forget things! ;) )
With engiemod this problem should be adressed, but there are still a lot of people out there who don't use it very efficiently.

Can some Pros plz comment this, because i don't see an issue with removing the engie bumping and would appreciate it.
Maybe someone can make a mod to test it?

Interesting, but I can't find any old topics about it. Only some reference to engy mod and unrelated things such as bumping ACU with units. Is there anyone in the current technical staff that can shed light if this is possible?

Engy mod itself does not solve issues with engineer bumping. Bunched up engineers are a major pain in the butt, not only in crowded bases. Moving a group leads to a lot of funny but frustrating behavior eve if you clear the way. Repeated move orders is sometimes the only way to get another unit or a higher tech engineer that you want to separate from the group to move out.
