Transport handling

Postby Iszh » 20 May 2014, 09:44

Hi i think the air transport can be improved to help factions like UEF and cybran and water Maps a bit more. My problem is that i tested the use of transports a lot lately and i think there should be added another kind of use to make them times more easy to use. So far if you want to create bridges over small waters you need to built a transport and make the start and the end (ferry). You can add planes to it they will assist this spot. BUT if this first plane is destroyed which happens very very easy as we all know especially on small maps you have to rearrange the ferry all them time. Your tanks lose the orders and dont collect somewhere just stand next to factory etc.

I see several ways to make this more easy:

1. The transport planes can do patrol order. If you can add the ferry order to all the land units and factories so they will go to a point and wait there and if a transport plane is in patrol range (can be shown like the ring of aircraft carriers for repairing planes) then automaticall a transport on patrol will come and deliver. No need for 1000 times renew the ferry after the transports are destroyed, just add them to partrol oder of interceptors.

2. The more simple version of No.1 is to add it simply to land factories so you can create at least somehow permanent transport lines.

3. Make the ferry oders permanent so they are not deleted after the trans planes die and transport planes with patrol oder in the range of the starting points will take it automatically if there is waiting somebody. (deleting can be added like the markers can be deleted with ctr + shift)

4. Add the ferry oder to air factories and all other planes then transport will handle it as a patrol order. But this would be still way worse than the first solution since when all transports are destroyed the factories and tanks lose their orders. :o

I think such a thing could make maps like four courners and dark heart times more easy for UEF and cybran players because it is to much clicking arround needed to settle trans atm and i think in general huge drops and ferry lines are underused.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I added here a picture which shows that all land units have a free spot for the ferry symbol. The code of the ferry would be the same for tanks and transports. The only change is that you have to tell the ferry routes that the transports on patrol will come and if there is none it is not an unhandled exception but simply waiting time for a not existing transport.

Could be interesting to be able to just paint a ferry command without having to have anything selected. like a button on the side of the screen or something.

You can already just tell the transports to assist a factory and they will drop the troops at the factories last move waypoint.

Man transports are just unreliable for me ... I don't know if it is just me but the % chance of things working out are pretty small. It would be nice to select 10 units and 2 transports and say "drop" somewhere. Sometimes it works.

I was wrong, not the ferry order is needed for the land units but the transport order so it looks like this:
(here you can see tanks with transport order in the movement path and a transport on patrol oder)

The units should move to the point where the transport starts and wait there like at the ferry symbol if a transport if coming and not like in the picture move arround somewhere. The shown transport should have the "special range circle" shown as "other" in the range circles like aircraft carriers and within this range automatically assist the transport orders of the units. The orders are already in the game but not automized until now. If it would be possible anyhow to realize this i will sent you roses

With this solution it would be possible to make complete move pathes for land factories and units over the map and built in the air factory interceptors and transport planes in a loop on patrol order close to this area. No need in any case to make 100 clicks to bring your units over the water.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But additional it would be nice if the ferry oder would be added in the air factories as explained in above post No.4 to use the ferry better.
(Sorry this does not work because you would create 5 times a new transport line with 5 new built planes. No solution for this :| )

There's no reason to do any of this IMO. Every time I see anyone mention improving the way Transports work it's because they don't understand how to use them properly at the moment. Literally every single thing that you want to be able to do can already be done. If you want to ferry a huge group of units to a location, it can be done. If you want to add more Transports to an existing ferry system, it can be done. If you want to set up a supply chain to get all your units to the front line, it can be done. If you want to be able to renew Transports as they are shot down, that, too, can already be done.

I know how to use the ferry system, the problem is that the ferry ways over small rivers and on mini maps like paradise or 4 corners are destroyed to easy be enemy interceptors and need lots of clicking to establish them again. Which is kinda deadly on small micro maps. With this proposed system not a single click would be needed and the ways over water would renew themselve.

Dude, if the Transports are being destroyed because the enemy's interceptors are shooting them down, no amount of funky UI is going to help you. As soon as your Transports go that direction, they will be shot down. Also, re-establishing ferry routes, or at least, keeping them going with new Transports, is one click.

When you add units to a ferry order it starts working straight away, he means that it would be nice if you could tell them to not go instantly as it causes lines and is better to go all at once. I myself load transports manually a lot for this reason. The units don't all load at the same time which leads to the transports being strung out and vulnerable
