AI in Coop campaign

When I say this, I don't mean the AI thats already present! I mean adding in functionality for say, the Sorian AI to be in a player slot and actually do stuff. This is really a "for the heck of it" kinda thing, and I wasn't sure where to put this little discussion.
Basically, I'd like to achieve the above, however, I have no idea where to start with that! I have no experience with modding FA, and this is a massive guess, but wonder if its just adding AI markers to the map that is the problem? Would it work? Also noticed that AI in those slots default to UEF, regardless of what you select it as, and curious as to why it would do that. And if all this would work, how would I go about doing it?
