A way to improve new players experience

Postby theeggroll » 20 Sep 2016, 10:48

I think there's a pretty simple way to help new players have a better experience.
When someone joins faf for the first time they join aeolus and they join a 2nd chat by default (Maybe called the "help" channel)
Noob friendly chat has 4 things in it
1. All moderators they can ask questions to
2. All trainers they can get help learning the game from
3. Other noobs of their level that they can make friends with and play games with
4. Links to tutorials appear periodically (QAI spam)
Once they reach the rank of 500 they no longer auto join the channel

I know quite a lot of players that are simply never crossing the 500 border, but are quite proficient in the game, since they only play unranked games ( phantom-X, vs. AIX, custom gaps, etc. ), so I don´t think the 500 is a valid cutoff point.

Best option would probably to let all players autojoin this channel once, with a remark from the chatbot saying:

"Hello, X. This is the help channel for new players. If you need help, this is the place to start. If you are experienced and would like to help, stay. If you feel, this channel is no longer of use to you, use /leave channelname and you will not autojoin this channel anymore."

So players can opt out, new players have an idea what´s it about, and experienced players who never read the forums, will still get to know about the channel and can decide whether they want to help training new players or not.

It is pretty much in there, but hasnt been merged. This implementation works by checking for a high deviation. Also has a autojoin feature ( for any channel) and adds language channels.

It's a pretty cool idea, until you come to like 4pm aus time and no mods are on (remember when we got a new mod? what happened to that...)

I would want to say that everyone would be able to be able to help assist new mwmbers, but we would just have aeolus
Maybe, branching off your idea, being a trainer would have you autojoin maybe #trainers and players can join #trainers looking for help?

We actually had this for a while, but it was never used and the few people who wrote there got responses after a few hours at best.

Would probably work much better if channels would highlight when there is a new message like most irc clients.

I think it would be great to have an autojoin channel for noobs, I'd be happy to be in there to answer questions and stuff.

We had a lovely "Personal Trainer" avatar and list of people made. Sadly it does not get used that much.

[ONI]Crehture still has a way to go, but I helped him go from 500 to where he is now and he still appreciates it to this day. I don't even really consider myself the best option for a trainer, but you don't have to be top-dog material to help noobs. The game is so complex that if you find that "needle in a haystack" player that wants to really learn it's so worth it in the end.

Visionik and I have only had a few convos but making a friendly, nice intro to new players is one of his top goals that I share.

Is it easy enough to just create #noob using the faf chat? And the just pointing new players there?

I would definitely use that and would be most useful to meet players same stage I'm at and a bonus if some experienced heads there too
