I know the ability to collect information from users is something that has been mentioned before, i don't know how far or how high the discussion went but I would like to make a case that improving this, and quickly, is perhaps the single most important thing FAF can do right now.
The recent balance changes are a prime example of why this is needed. Right from the off, many of the arguments have been primarily on a subjective basis. This is bad because it changes the game too much. This is good because it freshens the game up. I think this is a good direction for FAF. I think this is a bad direction for FAF. blah. blah. blah. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong.
This is a problem. How can one know what the best direction for a community is if there is no feedback from as much of the community as possible? One can argue that the opinion of a high ranked player is more important than that of a very casual lower ranked player. One can argue that the customer doesn't know what they want and an initially unpopular direction could turn out to be best for longevity of the community. But you can't even begin to have a discussion about any of this if you have no feedback from your community. 100 votes on a forum poll doesn't cut it. It may be the case that 1000s of users are aware of the vote and just don't care but can anyone quantify this? There needs to some sort of feedback option on the client, and it needs to be in your face (without being too obnoxious). Something you can only ignore if you don't care.
FA is unlike any game i have every played. There is nothing else like it. To me it ages more like backgammon or chess than Call of Duty 217. I stumbled across FAF by accident. I didn't have the CPU or the net to fully appreciate it when it first came out. I'm am convinced there are hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, out there that love this game but just don't know it. If this community is not to shrink, or maybe even miraculously draw some of the people i'm convinced are out there, there has to be a feedback system in place so decisions at the very top can be better discussed.
I'm not calling specifically for any sort of voting system either, I think in many cases feedback is better not to be public so the people at the top aren't held hostage by misconceived popular opinion. Having said that though, if 95% of this noob community want T4 pd, i almost wouldn't object if it meant there was a version of FAF alive in 1 year i didn't like rather than no FAF at all. But lets get a better feedback system first, then the powers that be can better decide how to weight opinions and where FAF should be headed.
I'm not even sure it believe it, but there my threadbare case, just in case anyone agrees.
