Remove "anti-offmap"

Postby Blodir » 30 Jun 2016, 16:29

For those who are not aware: Currently units lose move orders when near the edge of the map, apparently this was implemented as a "solution" to offmapping.

I would rather have more offmapping than continue constantly losing orders from any air units that stray too close to the edge of the map.

Just make intentional offmapping a bannable offense and be done with it.
Its so goddamn annoying to have your bomber lose target just cause the building you wanna hit is on the edge of the map.

Off mapping used to be a lot worse in vanilla. As units could move and shoot and not be targeted. This was changed so that units could be shot when off map, and this I think was a positive outcome. The only annoyance was that a player couldn't actually see off mapped units on approach. But as long as there was radar, or vision, air defences would still shoot.

There is no need to make off mapping a ban-able offence when it is a balanced and established game mechanic. If it really is so objectionable, then the game mechanics should be altered to make it impossible - but I don't think this can be done satisfactorily.

Perhaps a simple and easy fix would be to make strategic icons visible outside of the world border.

Could be possible to add a bit of "extra" map outside the border?

You have the "operation area" that's the size of the normal map and where you can click and do stuff and a extra bit beyond that that allows off-mapping but makes it not ugly.

Agreed. The current solution is just bad.
Not that I'd prefer to return to the offmapping ahwassas either though. That was ridiculous as well. A 40 by 40 map with an ahwassa appearing from the rear of your base was pointless.

You send your transport to the edge of the map, still inside the borders but just because it's too close to the edge of the map it gets stuck. So annoying.

Or your ahwassa, which flies off-map for basically every target run not in the middle of the map, just wanders off bombing random targets. On an already bugged unit this is a PAIN.

Requires modification of each and every map out there.

I also feel like we had this conversation once before somewhere here.

Solution: make all maps like Lionhardt where there is plenty of natural "off map" space such as his 20x20s that are condensed to 10x10 by surrounding it with natural terrain.

This will not only make the maps aesthetically pleasing, but aircraft will never have the need to go truly "off-map"

Simple 8-)

Oh wait, we don't have a map vault : /

It's a lot of work + map sizes are restricted to 5x5 10x10 20x20 so if you want to make a map where playable area is exactly 10x10 then you would have to make 20x20 map with an insane amount of wasted space that would, again, be an insane amount of work
