It would be handy to have the ability to divide whatever you have selected into subgroups automatically, possible by using the function keys like F1, F2, etc.

Lets say I have three scouts selected, I hit ctrl F3 and the mod automatically assigns one scout each to three groups, that can be selected using keys F1, F2, F3. If i had pressed ctrl F8, it would try and make 8 groups instead, bound to the first 8 F-keys.

The difference between these "divided" groups and normal groups is that they are automatically assigned & they are very temporary ... they get removed next time you divide a selection. If you wanted to keep a group you could promote it to a normal group by selecting it (F2) and manually assigning it to a normal group (ctrl-2).

This would be insanely useful for all sorts of things, but anywhere you have a group of units and you want to give them different orders... normally you zoom in to select it, then zoom out to give it orders, then zoom back in to select the second unit, then out again. With the proposed feature, a lot of back and forth zooming is removed.

So a precise way to divy up some orders.

Seems trivial but I like it. Amass scouts, f5. Press f1, send to locale A. Press f2, locale B... Nice scouting.

Want a third of your army with mixed units to break off? F3, F1-2 push on, 3 flanks. Instead of eyeballing it and getting all your arty by mistake, you have the correct mix splitting off.

I like it. ^_^

These is already a UI mod that does just this. Don't know where it can be found nowadays though.

Hey,

I think this is a really good idea and its completely 100% possible,
however, things get really complicated when splitting a group of units into a subgroups for a general purpose.

say you have a group of mixed t1, t2, t3 units how do you split them, i mean what groups would you want.
obviously you dont want to split them for scouting,

if you have a group of scouts selected and you split those, obvioulsy you have x amount of groups
for scouting this is easy.. but you wont be splitting the mixed t1,t2,t3 units for scouting..

so this is where splitting gets complicated.

i would guess the best way to split them would just be a category split,
we would have to split them by a predetermined set of categories.
it might be a good idea also to not mix structures and mobile units.

so..

get the desired number of groups, split the selection by category then split the category units by the number of desired groups,
combine each category unit group into the desired group number.

monitor each created group for when a unit dies so it can be removed from the group it is in,
so when this group is selected you dont give orders to a dead unit, (causes an error)

this then allows the splitting to work in any situation type dependant on the current selection

Somewhere there the logic for making formations, which already somehow divides up units by types and positions them accordingly. Perhaps we can harness that. Still, there will never be a good way of dividing a Monkey, 3 asf and an aurora by 2.

Another complication is geographical distance. If you have one scout on the left of the map, and two scouts on the right, and 3 in the middle, and select them all and divide by 2, what groups would be sensible to make in that case and how would the mod be able to work that out?

So, sure, its going to be hard to be perfect ... but I'd be happy with just the simple cases to be honest ... im sick of microing engie selection.

i have this mod. :D

used it before ctrl-g command to atack several targets. Now not really anymore.

Hey,

well i just spent an hour making the mod, i just need to add the filter now to put the units into groups.
ive never really looked at unit groups before, except to apply a mod units texture to the panel,

so anyway, what ive done is add 10 more unit groups, 11 - 20 inclusive
you can press alt + shift + num 0 -9 to split the groups into x groups, it will be by tech level * the amount of groups (for the time being)
then you can press alt + num 0-9 to select that unit group..

so, in doing this mod, i realised how easy it would be to add the ability for an unlimited amount of unit groups with group numbers visable on the unit like normal. but for this, it would need a dialog pop for creating the group and also for selecting the group number, so it wouldnt be as fast as a hotkey press.
it would work well though.

in advanced grouping you can:

-split your selection into a number of equal sub groups from 1-9 accessable with alt+number
-assign units to squads, that have no number, but if you select one of them, you will select all of them instead.
