also, what helped me a lot was just looking at the coding of those units.
For example, take the Goliath experimental mech from Blackops:Unleashed mod. When you lose it, it has a very complex death sequence. By reading its script you can learn exactly how it's done.
By looking at the ACU or SACU files, you can see how easily enhancements are done.
By comparing Scathis fire to t3 arty fire, you can easily spot the difference in the fire cycle - from that you learn what exactly does what, in the code (This is just one example how you can quickly learn exactly which value does what).
My point is - it's all out there, in theory - explained, but also in the units themselves. You see a piece of code you like making a unit behave how you want it - go learn how it's done by looking at its code. It's that simple
