Importing 3D models to blender then to supcom

Postby Franck83 » 02 Jan 2019, 21:50

I just want to share you some work from importing 3D models to blender then to supcom.

With a small work on textures, normal maps and specular to match the faction mood, and using some cool tools we can achieve a realistic result.

Here a Heavy Aircraft fighter made to be in the UEF mood.

Wow
This looks really fantastic. :)

How did you make the Texture (albedo, Normal map) for this Model?
Maybe you can show me how do you do them, because I want to retexture a few of my Cybran Air Units from my Mod in the future.
That could be really helpful for me to get more experience about Texturing.

Thank you :)

Keep up the good work. :)

Texture.
    - Drawing : copy nice textures even from real life ! Other advises will make them working for your faction. Don't spend too much time making all yourself.
    - Size : for big models like this one use 2048x2048 texture size for the best effect (you don't need for smaller ones).
You can work on your texture on 16384*16384 and apply effects... then just size it to 2048 just before export. So you can keep the best quality. Take care, too much effects diminishes the overall quality.
    - Colors pallet : you need to make your texture colors pallet matching your faction one. On the example above, i just used the UEF ACU colors pallet from its albedo !
If you got gimp, you can use this method : https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com ... k-and-whit
    - Gamma / constrast : then you need to adjust the gamma / contrast to match closest blending effect in game. Don't forget to set graphics settings to max under supcom when you are working !

Normal map.
you can generate it online http://cpetry.github.io/NormalMap-Online/. You got some gimp and PS tutorials on youtube too.
You need to turn it in gray colors. White is making high parts. Use same high resolution for working for best results.
Adjust for best natural effect. Use 2048*2048 resolution for precise effect.

Specular map.
Grants you some shining effect. Black parts gives your faction colors (full black on props remove the shining effect). Transparent parts let your natural texture appearing (you may need to add a Alpha layer to unlock transparency). You can adjust transparency level to make your faction color and natural texture blending well. Use 2048*2048 resolution for precise effect.

Hope this help ! have fun modeling and ty again for your help making my exports working :) !

Yes, my example above is an imported model and this is the thread's goal. Use high quality 3D models database existing and merge it to faction mood with best quality.

Well, that is awesome work. Aside from units there is also some decent scenery.

To do it properly, what else would you need to add to it?
Are you able to convert walk animations?
I guess you need to make LOD versions

Here are the current format we can import under blender (with no plugins research) :

Once done, you can find some professional models to import.
For a small amount of $, There are already textured, normal map and specular wtih all the stuff (ammo, barrels...).

Here a 4k poly model.

900 poly tank model :

All details are made by normal map and texture definition. Mesh don't need to be complicated. You can have very nice looking mesh in low poly.

About animations, some professional models are already animated and rigged. Once imported to blender, you can copy the armature bones and animations to your model. This is the next step i want to try :) !

Good news,

It seems when you buy a model that you can ask modelers an animation conversion to blender format. There is a request button directly on the buy screen.
And of course, once you got some nice animations, rig your models the same way and you can copy them :) I need to make a try.
