I've created a new mod that modifies the behaviour of the hotkeys. Originally, they worked with just building, but they've been changed in this mod. The mod has been created to add the ability to select units that fall under the hotbuild category that are in view. To clear things up, I'll throw in a few examples of how it works.

The original functionality still exists and will continue to construct units if you have Factories/Builders/Engineers selected. If you don't, it'll select the units that are in your view. (If you press a key that is assigned to build tanks without a factory selected, it will select all of those tanks that you can see on the map). This is a tester version, I'm mainly looking for opinions and feedback to improve it but I stand strong with the idea and hope this will bring some advantages to your games. It IS a UI mod so it's usable in any game without bringing too much of an advantage to the player that is using it. It's just an extra method to help with those who would like to train their APM. (Hopefully the mod doesn't make things too confusing). Download can be found at the bottom of this thread.

Quick Warning (Don't Panic)

This mod works with both hotkey layouts (yes there are two).

Hotkey Set 1 (Groups of Units):

The mod works better if you have your hotkeys set up for individual units (Set 2). It works with the groups, but it causes a tiny amount of lag (just under a second) where it's running through each category that's found in the specific group. (The lag depends on the size of the group too so please bear that in mind). This is not going to be a constant issue and will eventually be fixed when a decent method is found. I'd recommend setting some hotkeys to individual units to stop this, but that's up to you. The lag is barely noticeable but is still present.

End of Warning

Give it a test and see what you think! It won't break or cause any issues with current game mechanics, just be aware of the lag that you've been warned about. Have fun and happy hunting!

Installation Instructions:
- Unzip the mod to this directory: C:\Users\name\Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\Mods
- Enable the mod in the lobby and you're good to go.

Would it be possible to combine this with orders?

For example, i currently have my D key linked to dropping units from transports, but that means i can't use it for anything else. It would be great if the d key would drop units if i have my transport selected, build building x when i have an engy selected, construct unit y when i have my factory selected etc.

This is a really nice initiative.
I'd probably remove buildings from the selection. It's very rare that you need to select buildings in mass like this and it would simplify the selection a bit and make it more useful.

Agree with Farms, that would be a lovely feature.


This isn't useful to me personally(at least not yet in this state) due to using multiple different units in hotkey groups. The lag and combined selection are both a bit too much due to that. I'm using a rather similar system myself, where CTRL-KEY selects category(so KEY is hotbuild arty, CTRL-KEY is select indirect-fire.)

This sounds great except wouldn't a single key select land, air, naval units And buildings?

Right now, yes. It's being improved by both myself and Hussar. Going to release more versions later.

OP has been updated with a new version that fixes the minor lag caused by slow code. The mod is now on the vault and ready for use. Enjoy.

Found 2 behavior changes that make this mod unusable (for me). 1st: Mex upgrades through hotkeys aren't working, I have upgrade hotkey on spacebar, strangely factory upgrades work fine. 2nd: It probably applies to all rebinded shift keys but I only found one and then disabled the mod, Z makes MAA in the factory, but I rebinded shift-Z to split move, without the mod if you press shift-z with fac selected nothing happens, with the mod it removes your entire factory queue.
