"SupCom Loading Screen Mod" Request

Postby paxton676 » 06 Oct 2015, 09:27

This is to fix a bug in the game Forged Alliance. I am calling it a bug since the loading screen doesn't scale to widescreen field of view with your video resolution. Instead, it stretches it.

I want to use the original or first Supreme Commander loading screen with Forged Alliance. I have both games installed.

I want to do this because the Forged Alliance loading screen is in 4:3 ratio so it is stretched in widescreen resolutions. The Supreme Commander loading screen doesn't appear stretched in widescreen and it looks much better. Lastly, even though the original Supreme Commander only had the one loading screen and not different for each faction, I still prefer it to the stretched 4:3 of Forged Alliance.

Browsing the game directory I was able to see that Forged Alliance uses a movie(4:3 ratio) followed by an image for the loading screen. It has 4 of these movies and images, one for each faction. Supreme Commander uses an image background with a small portal movie in the foreground. Browsing the game files, It looks like the original game assets for this to work are already in Forged Alliance. The image and small portal movie are still there.

I am guessing this mod will be easy for someone who knows modding to create since it seems as though the assets are there but just need to change some script/code or something. I am guessing a .lua file edit of some kind.

I am asking for someone who knows what they are doing to make the mod for me. Please :)

UPDATE: In the meantime, I edited the 4 movies and images to be solid black or blank. Seeing just the words "tracking" is better than the stretched field of view.

Actually, I don't think the loading screen kicks in before mods are loaded, so a mod can't affect the lua code for the loading screen. (I tried to do some different work on the loading screen in the past).

Maaaybe a ui mod can replace the movie files with edited versions, like you did. Not sure.

The 'real fix' would be for a FAF developer to fix the FAF codebase (not a mod) and change the stretch behaviour. I'd also like to see it handle dual screen and stretch-over-two-screens.

But I'm sure people are working on bigger things.

Thanks, I agree the best thing would be for the game to not stretch the video and images. This way we could keep the Faction specific loading.

I also agree that they are probably working on bigger things. The loading screen is a minor gripe. Still, I would like it fixed.

I found a proper widescreen loading screen but it is for a new faction called nomads.

I wish they had done the 4 main factions too.

hey,

you do know you can just take the vanilla loading screen movie, rename it to the FA loading screen movie file name and put it in the movies folder.

This will make it work, not coding or converting required. a simple rename.
