What's off-mapping?

Postby Neutrino » 16 Jan 2015, 15:06

I've heard it mentioned that offmapping is an exploit but I'm not sure what it is. I don't see it mentioned here in the exploit list /viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1053

Making a guess it could be building stuff off the map (I don't know whether that's even possible).

The reason I ask is that air units often go off the map too, especially if you are trying to get a transport around the edge of the map, I was wondering whether that might be something to do with it.

It's having any unit outside of the map so nothing can shoot at it, air does this often automatically and sometimes intentionally. It's horrible, but not much we can do about it.

So if you set a path for a transport to skirt the edge of the map, it will inevitable go off map. Would that be considered exploiting? Won't patrolling inties and nearby air defences still try to shoot at it?

I believe aircraft can shoot at each other even when fighting off-map.

If a unit goes offmap too far it will loose all orders, but this measure can get bypassed by constantly giving commands. It's not bannable, but it's probably the worst "legal" exploit so I've barely seen people do it.

No you cannot offmap transport anymore as far as I know. You can offmap bombers totally, though. In GPG we had a gentlemen agreement to not do this in most games and in FAF most do not abuse this too much either. It still is inevitable with some units (like attacking something at edge of the map with ahwassa or strats.. it will offmap unless you micro it a lot to prevent that).

bigger maps and use that red frame in claustrophobia mod, so air would go outside map(red frame), but still could by vulnerable and visible, this would be solution

Off mapping occurs when you send an air unit on a path which will take it outside the map boundary. Way back in Vanilla SC AA units didn't fire on Air units which were off the map. It was considered extremely poor sportsmanship, but was never officially considered and exploit. As AA units are now able to shoot at units outside of the map boundary this problem is fixed (and has been for some time).
