Hotkeys and unit stats

Postby Jeroen De Dauw » 13 Jan 2015, 23:57

I'm relatively new to the game, and am running into some usability painpoints.

First off, I love the build mode, so I can select an engineer, hit "b" and then "e" for a mass extractor. When playing FAF, and building a UEF combat engineer, the build mode does not work. The same happens when playing Black Ops and selecting your commander. And I've seen it in other places as well, such as with a mobile naval shipyard added by some mod. What is the deal with this? It's very hard to get into the habit of using the keybindings if they do not work half of the time. Any way around this?

Searching this forums I came across the hotbuild mod, which is quite interesting. Assigning all the keys in a sane way requires overriding already used keys however, and I'd like to not diverge too much from "the default" layout. Unless there is a real standard alternative of which the locations are well thought out.

My second annoyance is with unit stats. A big part of the game is understanding which units are good for which task, and what counters what. Too learn this quickly, it's critically important to have the unit stats avilable during the game, so you can continuously learn. You can only see HP. Compared to StarCraft, where you can see range, fire rate,DPS and unit speed and armor type this is pretty sad (then again, you can only make 5 or so units there, so it'd be even worse if you did not have the stats :P).

What I've found so far is the "more unit stats" mod (forgot the exact name, and I'm not on my Windows box). This mod is a huge help, though only shows me the stats in the build menue. I can't see them when selecting a unit. And I still can't get the movement speed anywhere.

Another help is the FAF unit database. Even though it is a rather big pain to compare units via it, or category/sort them by some attribute. What I'm really still missing are stats of units added by mods. Most notably Black Ops. I'm trying to improve my build for a survival map, and trying to find what is most efficient (dps per mass, with decent range) is quite difficult, plus I'm totally in the black when it comes to the Black Ops units. I've searched for Black Ops stats, and found some not-even-half-assed wiki pages that are of absolutely no help. Being able to view the stats in game would also totally solve that issue.

Thanks for poitning to this video. I've already seen it though. In fact, this is how I learned about hotbuild.

As I pointed out, I'm somewhat hesitant to change the keys already bound to something. At least those that I'm activly using already. (I have done over a 200 games over the years (though rather casually), I'm not totally new to FA.) E might be rather arbitrary for reclaim, but it's also rather arbitrary for building sensors or T1 subs. If I change the keys as suggested in the vid, what do I do for reclaim? And why are you recommending the layout shown in the vid? I'm not seeing the system behind it. I'd expect either the first letters to match what is being build, to the extend this is possible. Or alternatively, to have positions of the items in the build menues match those of a QWERTY keyboard.

reclaim is either Q or A, and you will use to it in few games,
I thought the system is obvious, it puts the most used building together, so you have easy acces to them, W factory S mex, F pgen, etc. you dont need to move your hand over all keyboard, thats the purpose of that.
Also it build units from factories as they are in order W engie, E scout R lab/intie/frigate etc. also tech are pretty obvious they are in lines on keyboard W --> U T1, S--> L T2, X --> MT3

The picture was default layout, you can of course adjust it as you like

I've been using the hotbuild mod, and it's indeed quite nice. It's a bit of a pain to set up though - having to change all those keybindings one by one. Is there no way to export/import a number of settings?
