Help me I really am a newbie!

Hello everyone!

I've played Supreme Commander Forged Alliance for a while now, quite a few years on and off. I recently discovered FAF on my last re-install of the game and decided to make an account and join up to see what this is all about. I've played the steam version, and the non steam version before, and I wanted to know what the difference between those versions and FAF is?

I noticed there are now HQ's? Are these standard, what do they do, do I have to play with them?
What other changes are there? I know it's a bit too much to ask for a combined patch notes of every single version compared to the steam but I don't really need many specifics, I just want to know general things that change the game, such as the HQ's or major balances.

I primarily play Aeon, but I'm in the process of possibly switching to playing mostly Seraphim, what differences are there in those races in terms of balancing?

I understand that I'm asking a lot, so I don't expect much of a complete answer, but anything would be of help. If there is a topic covering this that I missed, link me, and then destroy this topic. Here is the stuff on the HQ: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3015

Basically to reduce t1 engi spam you can build "support facs" once you have a HQ which are very cheap to build.

I'm not sure exactly what changes there have been to aeon and sera overall. But you should be able to see differences using the supcom wikia (http://supcom.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) which was patch 3599 and the unit database for the current patch (http://www.faforever.com/faf/unitsDB/)

While there are many difference between Aeon and seraphim i think the most important one is the behaviour/handling of the T1 tanks.

Aeon Tanks have low hp but a higher range, they have to kite in oder to be effective and are very vulnerable to air. If you play aeon you always have to micro your T1 tanks.

Maybe I'll say something wrong so don't hesitate to correct me :
-Resto have been nerfed hard(I found it broken in the patch 3599)
-Mercy have more fuel
-You can build sacu or sacu with upgrades already done on it (instead of building the sacu then doing some upgrades)
-Com explosion is now 2500 to 500. (so it won't kill base alone, and I think the damage of com explosion in 3599 was higher)

Then, uh, I don't remember.

it's 3000 (500 in outer radius) to units and MUCH less to buildings so it cant be used as combomb anymore. It was 4000 to everything in 3599.
Also T3 navy has recived a massive buff. (costs/buildtime)

Thank you for all of the replies! Now that I understand HQ's, I really like the idea! I will probably look through the patch notes when I have more time, but what you've all said so far has answered my question.

com explosion is 2500 to any kind of units
and around 80-90 to buildings

not sure what about stationary shields, should be ~80 - 90 as well since armor type for shield will be "building"
