Increasing APM

Postby manread » 07 Sep 2014, 01:29

so i've been looking at the supcom replay reviewer and apparently i dont really go above 40-45 apm while most of my opponents get atleast 50 (and up to 80-90 sometimes)

firstly, is this such a bad thing? and secondly how can i increase it if it is?

Do you win a lot? It is just micro and reclaim bring those numbers up most of the time.

A fair amount of the time yes, but I also do a fair amount of manual reclaim depending on what the map is

Higher APM is only useful if you know exactly what you want to do, but you can't click fast enough to execute everything of it. I think most people rather have the opposite problem, and they won't profit from higher APM, they rather need to use their current clicks more useful.

Many people also make many useless clicks, increasing their APM values (i.e. I often give 2-3 moveorders instead of just 1, increasing my APM without any real value from it), but their effective APM is actually lower.

How to improve it anyway:

hotkeys will improve your APM a lot if you don't use them already. I had about 40 apm too before I started using hotkeys, but that was more than enough to be among the best players in GPG, so it is not necessary to have more.

If you know what you want to do already before you actually have to do it, your APM will increase by itself. You are not limited by how fast you can click (unless you have parkinson's, or set your mouse speed on the lowest possible value), but by how fast you can plan your clicks.

Thanks, I use quite a few hotkeys and there are only a few things that i need to hotkey that I havent, the only thing I dont really use hotkeys for are queuing units in a factory but that doesnt slow me down. I think that part about planning my clicks might be the problem, usually I dont plan too far ahead, which is another problem in itself in ladder matches

Voodoo is about 40-45 apm as well, congreve even less usually, so i guess you do not really need that much apm

fafafaf.bitbucket.org - use this site (APM, game chat, game settings, map, and what commands have been used at each replay time)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zdmi82qmsprebjh/FAF-Chart.zip - or download this program (more graphs and charts with "micro" "macro" and commands also in graps and charts)

i think those 2 programs use different ways of APM computation
