Attempting to write a guide, need help

Postby Mad`Mozart » 04 Sep 2014, 06:50

So i had this idea for a while and was thinking about it more and more lately to the point i decided to give it a try.
It wont be done fast though, not tomorrow or day after tomorrow or even next week... or ever :)

Anyways, regarding the help.
I would really appreciate if peopel would leave some 1v1 "problem" replays here withing 1300-1800 (maybe up to 1900) ladder raiting. It could be as well your own replay where you're not sure why you lost or someone else getting rekt and you're just interested why it happened, etc etc. In return, i will make a short analysys of that replay here.

Why wont i dig the replay vault myself and would try to abuse other peopel instead? Simple: 1) its too much work 2) and fucking boring. Well, i will still do it, but with peopel posting replays it will be much faster. Or at least names of active players withing same rating range so i can stalk them to see what are common mistakes for 1xxx rating and adress them in my guide.

PS not sure if its the right place for this thread and it will get much attention, but lets see.

Very nice idea. Here are two replays:

1. vs Embers on Forbidden Pass: http://faforever.com/faf/vault/replay_v ... id=2531080 (length 19:44)
2. vs MrMackey on Loki: http://faforever.com/faf/vault/replay_v ... id=2526892 (length 53:32)

In the game vs Embers I don't really know what I did wrong strategically, or if it's mostly due to micro mistakes. Although I am under 1900 ladder rating, Embers is over 1900. The second replay is a lower level game vs MrMackey. I that game I know I did many stupid strategic mistakes (starting with losing map control because my acu was idle for a few while which allowed him to get a pd in the expansion), but I think you can find many more mistakes than I do.

Good luck with your guide :)

Quick answers:

1. Your own gun or t2 pd. When you make t2 pd, position your acu in front of the pd to block overcharge. You can sometimes buy some time by shooting at him with air, if you have air control. Then he has to get anti air first. Don't feed him with units. The worst thing that can happen to you is if he has a gun acu with vet and you have no units left.
2. Build mobile missile launchers or t3 arties. If an important position or your base is in imminent danger, build your own pds to halt his progression of the pd creep.
3. Ctrl+k. Or put shield everywhere and build a million flaks and try to catch his strats with inties?
4. Get behind him on the first turn, then keep behind him by turning sharp. Mostly this just requires practice, rather than theory.
5. Drop important spots and bomb important things, I guess? I'm not sure what would be a proper answer here.
6. Use your range advantage, if your faction has that advantage, and dodge dodge dodge (unless vs sera destros). With cybran, don't run away, your ships can't shoot backward. Keep your frigs in front, so that they tank damage. Kill his destros first if you can, they have the highest DPS per HP. Against hoverspam use attack move with frigates. Don't run your navy into the middle of his ball of death hover clump. With sera destros, either surface all of them or submerge all of them. Submerging almost dead destros or whatever people do, is a bad idea. The whole point of submerging is to deny his surface DPS. If you still have naval units on the surface, his surface DPS isn't denied, but your submerged destro surface DPS is denied by yourself. Bad. Don't fight against aeon/cybran destros with your destros submerged in the first place, they will get owned unless you have a massive numbers advantage.

Is this because frigates outrange hover and you a) get free kills and b) dont suicide your units into tightly packed dps?

Ok, back to what i promised.

Was not a good start, usually if you scout your enemy not going any fast bombers its bad idea to go and force air fight closer to his base, he will always have advantage and win it. And you suicided even more air later on which would have stopped you from being agressive as aeon if you had units :) But somehow you didnt have much land units and lost air, so really nothing good there.

Later on you had 4 landfacs but still managed to lose your expansion to a bunch of tanks. First of all, you were bit slow on landfacs. Then you made poor strategic choices, had your units elsewhere but defending your expansions. Like that one on top, it got raided 2 times, first a bomber killed your engie, then 2 tanks killed mexes and engie drop. Bottom one got raided just by 3 tanks. And you instead sent your tanks to support your com push which wasnt a great idea too. Just to compare, at that point you had 30 auroras to 18 thaams.

That all was happening on 7 to 8 min in game. But on top of that you had eco problems at the same time getting t2 air. Your eco was not ready for that, so power crash and float mass. All of them bad things that could happen to your eco, happened at same time. Could've upgraded 2 t2 mexes and build more power with that "extra" mass. So this is where you lost it, around 8 min. At 9 min all you have is 1 unprotected expansion in the middle, very unreliable com push into t2 land and eco disadvantage. Had some brief air superiority but didnt use it, also single t1 pd was stopping you from denying Embers middle expansion :)

What i can suggest is focus more on one part of the map to take. You can either go for same middle exp with com and use your land spam to support it, take lefty one later on and you top will be well defended from land attacks while trying to raid and deny his opposite expansions. Or else, go to other middle exp with com, use land spam to support it and go for right corner + raid bottom and left corner. Also could try to contest other middle exp with aurora spam :)

So mainly what lost you this game is poor strategy.

Cant keep it simple, need to talk about too many things. Would rather do usual analysys using voice chat and watching replay if you want it.
