Need help picking a mod

Postby lex116 » 19 Mar 2014, 17:07

Hey I'm new to the whole FAF thing, I was obsessed with SupCom when it came out and I think maybe even picked it up the second or first day it was released in NA, anyway. I didn't even know FA existed until like 2 weeks ago when I saw SupCom was on sale for like 2 dollars and it's expansion was 2 more, needless to say I was went pretty crazy when I learned there was a new race and units and it's just awesome all around.

But to the point.

When I saw the best RTS I've played in years was basically free I convinced 3 other buddies to also pick up copies. One is a little less into RTS than myself but enjoys things like AoE occasionally, one love Strategy games ( Risk, Civ, etc.) but not real time, and the last guy has said he thinks he attempted AoE3 for like 20 minutes and was lost. They all seemed very interested in the lan party potential of the series and on the hype train though. :D

however :/

They all seem to be mildly unimpressed with I guess the "Vanilla FA" since it's a little rough around the edges and certainly has it's issues. SO, my question is, after looking over the mods and FAF in general which mod will serve my noobie lan party better: I was leaning towards the Nomads mod since they seem to almost be beginner friendly, in the same sense as UEF (planes and tanks and trucks are more easy to understand than something like the Seraphim units where somebody new doesn't even know what they're looking at) OR the Black Ops Unleashed Mod to have massive hype robot battles with lots of bug fixes and nice looking units. (not that the nomads look bad, I actually prefer them over some of the other races, specifically the aeon :/ but the last I saw of them some animations were sketchy and the unit icons weren't all finished.) Anyway if anyone can help with this it would be super cool and nice and awesome :D I'm so happy to have SupCom back and in maybe 2 weeks have about 80+ hours on again and it's kinda amazing that there's an active community still, thx guys :D

If you want to have fun with your buddies who are not into Supcom much, better play the coop campaign (Supcom and FA) on FAF, it'll be fun, and they will learn to play the game. You should stay away from mods at the beginning because the game is so complex already, there is no point for newcomers to play mods first.

Then, if they want more over the top units and action, they can try Black Ops and Total Mayhem (this one is not on FAF though). There is no real point in playing Nomads if they already don't know the original 4 factions, though it may be an option if one of your friend doesn't like any of the original faction (but then there is a high chance he will not like Supcom altogether) or for you if you want something new for yourself when your buddies discover the stock factions.

thx :3

I think it's more that they are intimidated by the economy system and don't really relate yet to a specific race, I thought the nomads would be a nice obviously different race to give more options, ya know>?

What exactly are they unimpressed about? We'd need to know that to give a recommendation. Compared to other games, FA already has a tremendous number of different units. Mods generally just add more units, so I'm not sure that will solve it. The normal FAF mod is by far better balanced and polished than any of the other mods, to the point that it's the only mod that's viable for competitive play. However, like some foods, it takes some time before you can really appreciate them.

I tried the vanilla campaign on co-op and couldn't get past the first mission. At 2 players we eventually got overrun by the massive amount of air that gets sent it because of the per-player multiplier, and at 4 we didn't make it past the first gunship rush, which contains about 40 gunships for 4 players.

But to the OP, what did they find unimpressive? I can't think of anything about SupCom that's unimpressive compared to the likes of AoE or even Civ, honestly.

One of them is a frequent SC:BW and SCII player and I think they don't understand for the most part that there's differences between the races other than cosmetics, they kinda have that "standard" rts style in mind (all these units are the same, racial bonus are just a few tweaks here and there) in a very AoE kind of sense. I thought the two mods I said added a little "pop" kinda making them stand out from each other.
