Help to get to average skill

Postby Flynn » 01 Feb 2014, 14:10

Guys seriously, I am coming up to my 1500 hundredth game and I am still getting beaten by relative noobs who only have a few hundred games to their name. Now I know a few things have changed in the community, for instance noobs seemed to get significantly more skilled last year in about...hmm...August-October last year I think it was? Anyway, I play many games and almost all of them seem to end in frustration, sometimes to people with lower rank and experience than me. I have done a phrase of "watching every replay" and "analysing every mistake" but it is like torture and it bores the hell out of me so I don't do it anymore. I can't seem to win, normally I try to make the minium land spam that I need to get by so that I have enough resources over for upgrading mexes and countering my opponents air with interceptors. I think when I started I was more aggressive and made maximum land spam and didn't bother to tech my economy until I gained the significant advantage and didn't bother to build air until later on. Should I go back to doing it like this? The only thing is, it seems a less skilled way to do it.

I'm not that good (1200) but for me I started getting a lot better after watching every point of view cast from zaphod x... there are only 20 of them and you get to see his methods and thinking, what works. He was about 1600-1800 I think, and won comps 10x in a row.

Zaphod would just spam out facs, get the gun, minimal air, no mex upgrades, no t2. And yes, that IS a skill to get that right.

Anyway I'd start there ... after that, watching TA4Life casts is where you really learn the game.

i got better by waching enemy replays, and pro replays, and memorising moves that saves you, some times it is hard to realise that you lost territory cause you ecoed or cause you invest to much in air, or you lost air cause you was ecoing...

on some maps can be opposite, you prioritise map controll to much and enemy just get t3 mexes and wins cause you can't hold your mexes well enought

i have not seen much of your replays, but there are also 2 things like micro and macro....
in case of macro why not just steal BO from Voodoo, Blackheart, or even RA_Amorally, or some one else who have organised bases
in case of micro... not much to say... you may want to just pull back your units and macro meanwhile, then try to get macto "on track" so you do not need to pay much attansion and you just focus more on unit controll...

edit also my cpm grows from 10 to ~60

ZLO & Zock also have a lot of point of view casts on their youtube channel.

Yeah I don't seem smart enough for this game at all. I can analyse myself although I don't do it for replays...they only help in that specific game, I really hate FA now, it causes me a lot of stress when I play it.

You are so boring Sheppard  None the less, I think I suffer from the following problems:

Underestimating my opponent by rating, leading to sloppy play.
Self sabotage, which is an extension of the above in that I think to myself "There is not waaaay he can win now" so then I start making really stupid decisions like stopping T3 land spam which is working well (if slowly) and start building Czar which allows him to take the advantage in the land battle, overwhelm my forces and then march into my base all before the Czar is done. That exact thing happened in one of my games.
Not being able to keep up with rebuilding destroyed mexes.
In regards to the above, forgetting that the objective is not to rebuild mexes as quickly as possible, but to take steps to prevent them getting destroyed in the first place.
I should remember to always send troops to my expansions, because that, is without doubt, where he will attack.

A lot of small stuff (like remembering to reclaim) needs to become habit, before it can help. This will help my game to a small extent but overall strategy is what will make the most difference.
