Hi Everybody! How do I join Chat?

Hi Gang,

I'm a complete noob to the online FA scene, I played a ton of supcom and FA with friends LANing at home in Melbourne, but they've all drifted into serious lives with jobs and kids and can't seem to take 8 hours out of every week at the same time to play games anymore

I've been watching Gyle's casts for the last month or so, loving his work, it's got me enthused to have a go online.

I've got a few hurdles to overcome, using a Macbook Pro, so, the OSX => wineskin => steam => FA pipe needs to be negotiated, and then I need to see if I've got the grunt to play these games (it's quite new and high spec, so it might do ok)

I've got steam downloading the game and wanted to get a head start on the lobby / chat stuff. I saw the link to the IRC server, but it says I need to have a registered user name to join the channel.

Any tips?

Well, I got FA up and running on my mac through wineskin and steam no problems, the lobby appears to work reasonably well at first, however when I double click one of the tutorial replays, it flashes though a few progress bars, but no further action or error is displayed.

Are you sure it might not be easier just to use bootcamp?

Hi, if you want to join via irc:

1. Use an irc client like mibbit: http://client00.chat.mibbit.com/?server ... =%23Aeolus
2. click on the server tab
3. write this: /msg nickServ REGISTER <password> <Email>
e.g. /msg nickserv register 12345 [email protected]
4. write this: /msg nickServ IDENTIFY <password>
5. write this: /join #aeolus

Are you sure it might not be easier just to use bootcamp?

I had both the game and the lobby installed and working fine, lost two games (felt like I was improving, good sign) but now I'm getting an outdated warning on the FAF client, even though I re-installed it, and if I try to run the base game I get:

c:\steam\steamapps\common\supreme commander forged alliance\gamedata\effects.scd\effects\mesh.fx: unable to create effect: c:\steam\steamapps\common\supreme commander forged alliance\gamedata\effects.scd\effects\mesh.fx reason: unknown error

Ok, that's typical. Spend a whole day trying to fix it, finally give up and post, then find the solution.

So 0.10.94 was installed to c:\Forged Alliance Forever

But 0.10.95 installed to c:\Program Files\Forged Alliance Forever

So I was installing the new version then opening the old version.

Fixing that let me connect to the lobby, which patched up the supreme commander game, which now lets me play
