Is there a way to let units keep formations while moving long distances like in Age of Empire?

yes it is, but i do it by muscle memory and not sure about keys, probably right+left clicks + drag away, then just make same but hold shift and send them where you want, there is also some keyboard keys for formations

hold Right click, them will appers a previwen of your units in yellow, rotate and click...
NOTE, Formation(even of the same unit) make the units travel at lower speed
...
