Establishing a forward defensive line vs more assault units

Postby Flynn » 02 Mar 2013, 14:59

There is an old adage, I can't remember whether it was from SupCom or Total Annihilation, but it goes something like "For the mass you put into defensive structures, you could build a bigger army to attack the enemy with" so as a result I have largely avoided building defensive structures in my games. However, I have noticed in a lot of pro replays that the pros do infact build defenses on the frontline to hold the ground behind their units. I have started building defenses to secure my positions and have seen a positive result from it. Now that I have started building more defenses I can see that they really help if placed in strategic locations.

I've seen some very sneaky use of walls by high rated players, Just putting 3x3 wall templates at certain locations to trick people into thinking there's a PD there and stop them advancing or delay them. Funny watching an army stop for 10-15 seconds just so arty can kill some walls

thats on of these tricks that are insanely old but still work for some reason...
although it doesnt work on lower level plays because the players there simply do not build scouts xD

Oh yeah I forgot the most important part lol. Yeah basically is it worth building defenses or should I put the mass into more units instead?

It's worth building defenses, since they tend to be fairly mass-effective. However, you need to know if they're going to be used. It's pointless to build a defensive line, have it get scouted and then none of the defenses actually get used. I've found that putting up a t1 PD in just the right location can turn the tide of a battle at crucial moment, such as when you need to repel the enemy comm.
