Rating Conciousness

Postby Sunder » 15 Oct 2012, 07:55

I have a problem with FaF, and it's not a technical issue, it's more an implementation choice that is popular with people but paralyzing to me.

I am rating conscious; which basically means I am not capable of playing games that affect a rating non-competitively (ie, I will only use tried and tested theories and not run experiments.)

From what I understand, all games affect visible true-skill; there is no option for 'unranked games' when creating a game. This basically prevents me from playing on FaF because I cannot test new theories (which is very different to Steam, especially when comparing dropships, late-game, etc), because doing so forgoes rating each time.

Am I wrong in this understanding, or does FaF run a strict 'you shouldn't care about ratings policy' ?

You could make the speed adjustable, that way the game won't get counted iirc.

In my experience, the more I worried about my rating the less it improved. Its only when you stop looking at it and focusing on your game that you really get better. When that happens your rating will naturally come up like mine did.

Why don't you host games with adjustable speed when you want unrated games?

there is a button in the lobby "default" for the guy, who hosts a game.

when you push it, all settings will be set to default. the score will be counted.

if you adjust an important setting differently (play thermo, not assassination, adjustable game speed, cheats enabled, not fog of war, different unit limit, prebuild units, etc.) the game score will NOT be counted.

if you want to test theories for yourself, play a game and enable cheats and adjustable game speed. when you are ingame, press alt+f2 to cheat. this is the most easy way to cheat.

I wouldn't worry about your rating Sunder, for now I would host some "noob only" games and get used to the differences on FAF rather than steam, and there are many!!

People focus on their rating far too much on FAF, its one of the things I really dislike as it encourages stacking all the time. Plus if you only win your rating will be so high that no one but the very best will want to play you.

Best of luck I hope the anti-noob brigade don't scare you off.

Im Iggle Piggle by the way I played a few with you on Steam.
