FA link to steam HELP!

So I havent played this game in ages but decided to play today. FAF says I need to link my steam account? I never owned the game on steam bc I bought a boxed copy when the game first came out. Does this mean I need to buy it on steam now to play it?! If someone can help please let me know bc this is confusing the game always worked fine without me having to purchase a steam copy...

I just activated it but i am still geting this error: Error You do not own Forged Alliance on Steam or your profile is private. Please set your games list temporarily to public. My profile is not private either but its all public. WTH?! Do I need to install the game on steam? I thought I read somewhere it does not need to be installed on steam...
