Any ideas how to improve game performance?

Postby slavo77 » 04 Dec 2016, 15:05

Hello Supreme Commander Comunnity
I have AMD procesor Phenom II X 4 955 4x3.2GHz
12GB Ram
Geforce GTX 670 2GB
100/100 Mbit connection.
in game (CPU score 332)
Any ideas how to improve game performance?

The game goes smoothly
but after a while the game will slow down even when FPS is ok
Especially on larger maps in the number of players 8+
9 years old game and still not optimized? The game does not use all the processor cores ? or why it slows?

Thanks for help

absolutely correct - game is not optimized for multi-core cpus.

this is why it slows down.
also it slows down to the speed of the slowest player in the game so they can keep up.

the fps and game speed are separate, good fps means you have a good gpu, but single core cpu performance is the most common bottleneck.

fa has 17 threads but only one is the sim thread and thats the largest performance hog.

its not possible to make fa optimised for mutli core without a complete rewrite of the sim engine.
its not possible to do that without owning the game and IP which costs multiple million $
its not possible to get that due to extremely complicated procedures even if you do have the money
and then if all that happens it would still take at least 2 years of work with a proper paid team to rewrite it.

tldr: the game slows down to the speed of the slowest player, if that bothers you play smaller maps with fewer units in the game,

The biggest contribution to slow down is the number of units.

As Exotic correctly points out -- you will be limited by the speed of whichever player has the slowest computer.

If you are playing with multiple AI's -- it's better to use less AI's but with a higher cheat value.

Map size has little impact on game speed (aside from the fact it usually has more mass -- so more units sooner) BUT having said that,
map markers have a HUGE impact on performance for the AI's. It's not unusual for 2 maps of the same size to have very different
overall performance when using AI's.
