I see he's coming with his asf so I engage the asf and ignore torp bombers. No flak or cruisers nearby. It is asf v asf. I lose. Yes. I need practice and lots of it. I've seen Speed2 video on asf micro and other asf tutorial on youtube.
Is there any tricks or tips or advice anyone can give me besides more practice? I'm just talking straight up asf vs asf nothing else.
Thanks in advance.
Well first off, I'm not the best at air micro. When it comes to making those really tight circles I will often get beat by better players. I'm still learning this too, so, any better players out there please feel free to call this crap.
This first thing I should say is that nothing is purely ASF vs. ASF. 9/10 there is some other catalyst for causing the ASF fight - it is very rare for one air player to decide, "heck I'll just go and kill the enemy ASF", when they have equal numbers. So the first problem is that you haven't evaluated the battlefield to locate SAM's, Cruisers, and other forms of AA as possible points of retreat.
The other problem is this:
so I engage the asf and ignore torp bombers.
Now. The second thing you need to do after identifying where your teams AA is, is working out what your game plan is. Now, he's moved in with his ASF, which is a pretty standard response. But you've identified ASF vs. ASF as your only option. Have you considered doing a formation strafe to take out the torp bombers, and then completely evading the ASF? If your game plan is to protect your naval player, and with equal numbers an ASF fight could work against you, then taking out the torps while also evading the ASF battle is a win for you...
The other tactical option which you need to consider is whether you even engage at all? Can your navy tank the damage? Will he get cruisers out? What will this cost him? Is this a critical blow? If you are on par for ASF, and he's made more torps, this means you can probably get ahead on eco. So avoiding battle, and eco to get more ASF could be a smart move. But this depends on the cost for your navy.
I'm no expert, but, for me personally, the thing I would do is a move order through the middle of the torp bomber group. Taking out as many as possible and being careful not to break formation. I would then turn into the enemy ASF as we meet and fly straight through them at max speed. The casualties on both sides will be about equal. Then instead of turning I would continue straight, wait to see his turn direction, and turn in the same hand as your opponent (in a loose circle to keep my speed up). This will give you a comfortable lead and you can break the engagement without losses. Then you will identify your place of retreat, and fly straight for it.
