i know the von neumann concept and it gets explained in the book as well.

there is a twist in the book, though. all von neumann probes will kill entire planets and self replicate. nothing more. but in the book the von neumann probes were sent by humans about 10.000 years ago and this is the only reason the von neumann probe can be stopped.

the book puts humanity in a post von neumann war era. this is interesting as well. nobody knows how a small group of humans could survive...

i have read it a couple of times. i love it.

it is about a young boy, who wants to make all people rich by inventing self-replicating robots. this way, all the work can be done by robots without any additional cost.
an ACU can (almost) self-replicate as well, just build an SCU... and this SCU builds another, and another, and ...

i do not read them, but i listen to them as audio books (i try to get the non-shortened version).
i love them, especially: "der letzte seiner art", "haarteppichknüpfer", "quest" (this is a prequel to haarteppichknüpfter), and "kelwitt's stern".

imo, andreas eschbach is one of the best german authors.

i read quest some time ago and haarteppichknüpfer only a few months ago.
wasnt sure about kelwitts stern so far so i havent read/heard it yet.
do you know ausgebrannt and eine billion dollar? these were some of my favorites.

and the marsproject. although they are youth books they are pretty cool.
i also read "die seltene gabe" but it was a bit too short to be compared to "ausgebrannt" "eine billion dollar" or "herr aller dinge" (my 3 favorites).

You could practically do with this world whatever it pleased you, which is boring..
