Star Wars The Clone Wars S3E3

There's a question that's been bugging me since I read "The Art of War" - the Jedi general could've easily retreated with the clones and continued to fight. They had enough time to retreat instead of dying altogether, why make such poor choice? That is not how wars should be conducted. What, no one of the Jedi generals read "The Art of War"? If so, they can never qualify for a general as they have no knowledge on how to fight a war + they have many limitations due to their way of life.
