FAF Client crashing in Vista

Postby SiliconKnight » 14 Mar 2012, 01:20

I have been successful in getting the FAF client to work on several machines, but now I am trying on a Vista machine (for the first time), and after install/updates (worked fine during that period), FAF now crashes upon execution. Below is a copy of a section of the FAF log showing several startup sequences. Any help/suggesions would be appreciated.

Urgh. So you're not getting FAF's crash dialog, I presume, but instead some crash from Windows?

What is it, a C++ Runtime Error? Do you have a screenshot of what the crash looks like?

We had several outages that night due to an UDP flood at ZeP's hoster, and the client had some issues properly connecting there. But that would leave traces in the logfile, your client seems to die at the very instant it's writing to the connection.

Did you try downloading the latest version from faforever.com ? I changed something about the sockets yesterday (but it's unlikely that caused the crash, nevertheless)

Edit: It could be that the client crashes (it rarely does, nowadays), but the crash report form crashes harder (some people were having strange runtime error issues with the bug report form, maybe the crash report is affected, too).
I waited ten years for Supreme Commander (1997-2007)
and have not a single day felt disappointed with it!

Thygrrr,

Thank you so much for replying so quickly (I cannot imagine how busy you must be with this "side" project). I did get it to work long enough to login and DL an update so I saw the message in the FAF chat room about the server being down (after I posted this issue, sorry).

So, I decided to wait and try it again today. It seemed to work (I was able to login to FAF, create a custom game). So, I would consider this either a possible side-effect of the server being down or non-reproduceable.

For future reference, you are correct - there was no crash dialog. The FA Lobby interface just went to the faded white overlay and Vista prompted with a small dialog saying that "FAForever.exe has stopped responding and needs to be closed" (or something similar - sorry I don't have a screenshot), that only had a "Close Program" button.

Now to work on getting my firewall setup to allow two players behind it (that was the point of getting this Vista machine up and going!). Wish me luck!

Thanks again for the untold hours that you have clearly spent on FAF. I look forward to many more hours (years?) of playing FA! I will definitely be making a donation to help support the cause!

Well, we were able to start a game with 3 machines all behind the same firewall, so that test went well. Later I'll have to try again with some outside the firewall.

Unfortunately, immediately after that successful test, I came back to try FAF again, and it crashed just like before. I'm uploading a screen shot of the crashed FAF Client for reference, and the last portion of the logs are posted below (crash occurred at ~13:03). Again, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I DLed and installed Build 351, but when I try to execute it, it says I have an outdated version and prompts me to download the "download and install the update now."

I presume this has to do with the current/existing version and I suspect what you provided was a pre-release. Following the logic that I already have the version installed that I need, I click "No" and it exits. I assume that if I click "Yes" it will overwrite the Build 351 that you provided with whatever is current on the server?

How do I keep it from version checking to test this? (Sorry, I'm new to FAF and don't really know the ins/outs yet)

[Edit]: Disregard, looks like the new version is on the server and you updated your post. Should've been more patient. I'll test and let you know.

Still intermittent crashes. I've tried several times and it crashed about 90% of the time (yes, 1 in 10 it seems to work ok). It crashes at various times during init of the FAF client. Sometimes it's while retrieving commands from the server (e.g. during the response to the EXCEPTS command), sometimes it's after it opens the #aeolus channel. I was reconnecting too fast got throttled by the server, and it even crashed after the first line of that error (never showed the "connection reset by peer" second line).

Any ideas?

That's ... so strange. Is the PC in question running stuff fine otherwise?

Yes, no other known issues with this PC (Dell XPS 1530 laptop running Vista - I know....I'll eventually upgrade it to Win 7...but for now...). Unfortunately, this is my only Vista machine, so I have very little experience with it. I just wish it provided some sort of hint of why it is crashing. Any ideas on OS logs we might pull?
