I admit it, I'm dumb

Postby SJAndrew » 05 Mar 2012, 21:33

I can't view FAF replays. I have installed FAF replay switcher without luck.

I presume there is some sort of client-side FAF patch to update SCFA to FAF3611 (as far as I know, my client is still 3599 or whatever the latest official GPG patch was - though I have 3603 as a mod). This might be a total red herring misunderstanding on my part, but if it's not, can someone please direct me to it?

Bottom line: what do I need to install to view FAF replays?

I have played ~8 FAF games and everything works fine through the FAF lobby (hosting, joining, playing etc). The only thing I can't get to work is the replays.

This, to me, is important as I regularly get slaughtered and I would like to view proper build order etc.

With GPG gone, there is a vast divide between people like me (who played GPG vanilla games for years) and the people here who have been playing FAF 3610/3611 games. Now that I must play here (which I enjoy, there are more games and more people than on GPG), I need replays in order to try and compete.

Thanks!

Luckily being dumb is a requisite of being here :P

The replay manager from jls17 doesnt work here. You should be able to watch live replays from the FAF lobby.
If you want to watch saved games then you need to use the fa.exe file stored at
C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin

Can I presume that installing FAF (the lobby) installs this folder on my client?

C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin
There is a forgedalliance.exe file there. Open that use the menu to navigate to extras - > replays then you may need to deselect show only my files. Sometimes there can be an issue with the naming convention, you may need to edit the replay name and remove any hyphens " - " from the game name.

I have manually reassociated replay files to that executable, and also run that executable to open a replay, and neither works.

On my machine it is located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance\binFAF\ForgedAlliance.exe

Whether I run that file or its base twin, the replays simply won't work.

Any ideas?

There is no separate FAF installation folder (i have looked in program files and program files (x86)). There is only a different bin folder within the regular scfa folder (one is bin and one is binfaf).

I have played faf games and have the faf lobby installed. Both work without issue. Is there something else i need to install?

Re-read carefully what Anaryl said. Or the wiki.

You can remove that binFAF folder, it's not needed anymore.

i suggested to Zep to integrate a button, which launches FAF in main menu, so you can open the ingame replay manager. I often have the problem, that windows opens the wrong FA too.

I can put this in as a menu option or even a button, no problem.

But really, we need to stop thinking of replays as being interchangeable "video tapes", they are command streams tailored for specific maps, mods, and game versions.
I waited ten years for Supreme Commander (1997-2007)
and have not a single day felt disappointed with it!

I don't know what to say - there is no FAForever folder on my machine.

I will try the cross swords method and see if that works.

I have no idea what executable or path FAF calls when I launch a game via the lobby. :?:
