Instant crash

Postby catalyst0435 » 15 Feb 2012, 23:01

Hey, new to FAF; a friend of mine used to play a lot of FA and now we wanted to go back, and FAF sounded awesome.

Unfortunately, I install it, try to run it, and it crashes. Here are the interesting bits of the error log:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "chat\__init__.pyc", line 595, in connect
File "chat\irclib.pyc", line 1092, in irc_connect
File "chat\irclib.pyc", line 438, in connect

Try again?

Maybe your firewall blocks port 6667, that is used for IRC. The crash is pretty unfriendly, though, so I'll look into that.

Well that would be unfortunate if it were a port problem since I'm at a university and don't really have control of the forwarding. Is there a way to just turn of IRC so I can have access to the other lobby features?

Not at the moment, but were you able to chat with the old lobby?

You do not need port forwarding for IRC. However, IRC is considered "Riskware" by some internet security products, because many hacked computers are used as IRC bots and you can get a lot of malware through certain crappy IRC clients (*cough cough* mirc *cough*)

I never used the old lobby, I just discovered FAF. I still get the error after putting down my firewall. Very sad

I'll put something in the code this weekend that won't let the lobby crash this way if it can't make an IRC connection. You may not get the full experience out of FAF this way, though (people can't see you online, etc)!

As a more permanent fix, maybe ZePilOt can open another port on the IRC server, but don't count on it. It is an uncommon, but not rare, thing to have IRC standard ports blocked on corporate or campus networks.
