If it's your first update, the installer is supposed to put an key in the registry about the path you provide.

Seems that it cannot get it.

The solution to this problem is to run FAF as admin. If you do not run as admin, FAF cannot update properly and the necessary updates will fail.

I did id run it as admin. Did not help.
Any other suggestoins?

And why do you use the registry for storage?
Python has XML-Modules, hasn't it?

edit:
I uninstalled faf and removed the folder. Then reinstalled it. The problem remains the same.
Just tell me which registry keys to set. I can handle regedit.

edit2:
here is what faf stored so far:

I will have a look tomorrow.

You can try to remove the "\\" in the path (replace them with only one "\") to see if it solve it (and please tell it here if it works).

The double \ are due to escaping in strings in the dump. \ is the escape character in double quoted c-strings, so backslashes have to be escaped.
The unescaped value is <<E:\games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance>>
