Unhandled Exception

Postby Wertikov » 08 Jul 2020, 10:51

Dear all,

My issue is twofold:
The game freezes when closed and freezes during battle randomly.

In detail:
When I close the game, it freezes. I receive no error message and am not able to switch to any other window.
My only option is to Ctrl-Esc to the windows panel and navigate via the arrow-keys to restart windows.

During battle the game freezes (campaign or multiplayer, versus AI or humans, after 1min or 60min, nothing seems to matter) and gives the error message:
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at address 0x262de58 attempted to read memory at 0x5f5ef079
I am not able to Alt-Tab to the exception to copy/save it, neither am I able to switch to any other window. (Find photo attached)
The only option I have is to hold Alt-Tab and use the mouse to close the preview window of the error message. Most of the time, the game closes with this action. Sometimes I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to the Taskmanager and close the game with the arrow-keys and the context-menu-key.

What I have done so far:
Checked the stereo-surround issue --> I only have stereo
Played with and without headphones --> no change
set in-game music to 0 --> no change
set in-game language to German --> no change
reinstalled the game on steam and FAF --> no change
set virtual memory from automatic to manual (4000-8000 MB) --> no change
added FAF and both game.exe (steam and faf) to the permission of windows defender firewall (privat and public) --> no change
added FAF and both game.exe (steam and faf) to the permission of windows security ransomware --> no change
tried playing without cybran --> no change
tried playing without engineering stations --> no change
tried playing in windowed modus --> no change
tried playing on all video settings to minimum or off --> no change
tried compability mode of winXP SP2 --> FAF client does not start the game
tried kompability mode of win7 --> no change
tried starting FAF and the game as admin --> no change
tried playing an other game --> no fun

Follow up - Unhandled Exception

Postby Wertikov » 08 Jul 2020, 11:55

I was able to copy the closing error into a text editor.
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at address 0x023fd790 attempted to read memory at 0x3f04212c
Please see attached.

I ran the Windows DISM-repair-tool and the Windows sfc/scannow --> something was repaired.
Here is the how to: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system
For Windows CBS LogFile please see attached.

I ran the 'Memory test' from the 'Ryzen DRAM Calculator' for 6hours and 30minutes 8 times parallel with 7 times 2GB RAM and 1 time "remaining spare memory".
Not a single error found.
Here is the how to: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ryzen-dram-calculator/
For result see attached.

I tried to read the the Windows Error Reports with 'AppCrashView' but the folders were all empty. Windows was not able to create an report of these crashes.
You can find the reports in your C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive by default.
Here is the programm i used: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html

First Success - Unhandled Exception

Postby Wertikov » 10 Jul 2020, 23:29

I uninstalled SupComFA on Steam again as well as FAF.
In addition I deleted all known folders, so: C:\ProgramData\FAForever\ and Documents\my games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\.
Now I screened my system with 'Everything' from 'Void': https://www.voidtools.com/
I searched for 'Supreme', 'Forged', 'Powered' and 'Forever' and deleted everything related to the game.
I re-installed the game and FAF on C:/ (my SSD instead of my HDD) this time.
After activating 'run as admin' for the game and client, as well as adding all three *.exe to the ransomware and defender exception, I started the game.
First success: IT DOES NOT FREEZ WHEN CLOSING! 8-)
Tomorrow I will run some matches versus bots to check the in-game crashes. If this also works, I will do a summary and close this thread.
Many thanks to Tim Ahrens so far!

You should not be running faf as admin but running sfc and dism are always useful for repairing system files. It's amazing how many windows errors can be corrected this way

After running 10 games without any crashes, the solution is
high likely:
Windows DISM-repair-tool and the Windows sfc/scannow: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system
maybe:
deinstall FAF and the game on steam,
delete everything related to it
reinstall the steam game and FAF on the drive of your operating system (windows)
run FAF and the game as admin (Not recommended by the community!)

Thread can be closed
Many thanks to Tim Ahrens -> I owe you one!
