Client won't accept my changed password

I used to play on FAF years and years ago, want to get back into it at long last. I tried to recover my account password and the client won't accept the password change, denying my login. I tried to make an entirely new account with a different email, as well, and that also failed. Am I missing a step? This is pretty frustrating.

Make sure you're logging in with your username, not email.

make sure you spell your password correctly
what happens when you try to log in on the faforever website?

I very much doubt I have spelled my password incorrectly 10 times in a row.

The FAForever website also rejects my login as invalid, and if I try to register it says my email is already registered.

well then you must enter the incorrect password (or username)
try resetting your password via the website i guess

Finally got it working by trying ancient login IDs I used to use until one worked. Was a headache, but this game is worth it. Thanks.
