Stuck in loop linking to Steam

I own the game in Steam and used to use FAF years ago. I'm trying to set it up again and getting stuck in a loop. My profile is public on Steam.

When I try to run FAF, it says"

Unfortunately, you must currently link your account to Steam in order to play Forged Alliance Forever. You can do so on --------------------link.

I follow the link and try to link to my Steam account, and it says:

Error You linked this account already to user with name 'deanwissing'.

So the account must be already linked, but when I run the program, it keeps telling me I need to link the account.

Is there a way to unlink the accounts and start over?

why don't you log in with your faf acc "deanwissing"?
