Ok so I fixed the problem. I already had FA installed on my computer via my CD. In Steam, I linked the .exe file under "Add a Non-Steam Game," so "ForgedAlliance" appeared in my games list. This wasn't working. I then went to "Activate a Product on Steam," and used my CD key to link my hard copy to Steam. However, Steam wouldn't connect the dots between my already installed FA and the version of FA that it wanted to download and install for me. So I had to uninstall my copy of FA, and then download and install the version that Steam wanted me to get.
In the end, it worked, but it seems silly to have to uninstall the game that you installed via CD and then reinstall it through Steam. Whether it was necessary to do this uninstall/reinstall or not, I would suggest updating the instructions on how to link your FAF account to Steam so future players aren't confused. In other words, it should be spelled out how to properly link Steam to your already installed copy of FA without having to download and reinstall it from Steam, or it should be mentioned that the reinstall is actually a necessary step. Dankeschön!
