Our solution for DCs problem

Postby AISguy » 06 May 2018, 11:07

TL;DR version:
Spoiler: show
2 players on one modem, CPU 288 and 450, random DCs, solved through Steam version and Ethernet connection.

EDIT: Watch the following posts. The problem wasn't solved.

Hello everyone!
In this post, I want to tell you how me and my friend solved a problem of regular disconnections.
I'm writing this post because we haven't found information which was similar to our situation and I think it may be useful for people who found themselves in a similar situation.

We're living in a dormitory and playing FAF through laptops. The friend plays through WiFi (no Ethernet socket), me through Ethernet. All through the same modem. The CPU is 288 and 450. We played FAF games with bots and without mods.
During these games, we always had disconnections (DCs) after some time. The DCs timings seemed to be random - it was 7 minutes, 25, 35, 13, but never more than 40 without special conditions. There was no desync warning ever.
We managed to sustain the match for more than 40 minutes only twice.
1. Two commanders were walking on the map and doing nothing but that. Two hours, no DC.
2. Reaching unit cap on Eye of the Storm without fighting, only two players (me and my friend) on the map. 1h40min, got DC at the end.

We tested two different game versions and got interesting results. At the beginning, I had 1.5.3603 and my friend had a Steam version. With this setup, we experienced DC's that were mentioned before.
Then my fiend tried to switch to 1.5.3603. We tried to launch a match twice. In the first match, we got DC right after the start. In the second, got DC after a couple of minutes.

After this, the friend bought a usb-to-ethernet adapter and I bought a Steam version of the game. After this, we didn't experience DCs. We've already played two FA campaign missions (2h+ each) and several matches with bots (also 1.5h+ each to check) - no DCs.

I hope this info will be useful to someone.

P.S. I haven't found a thread specified for problems like this. That would be good to have a thread where people gather the cases of DC problems and their solutions (if any).

Well, you changed the game version and "usb-to-ethernet adapter".
What was now causing the problem, the game version or the W-LAN connection?

1. Can you test the non-steam + steam version with the usb-to-ethernet adapter?
2. And can you test both Steam versions with W-LAN on one laptop?

I bet the crashes will only occur with W-LAN.
But a test would be nice :)

please read the red text above and post logs

my guess is that you don't have a mapped port for the game and the proxy (which you use in faf as a fallback if you don't have an open port) fails you as soon as you have a single connection issue

Solution -> map a port (default is 6112 UDP) to your local IP and a different port (eg 6132) to the local ip of your friend (assuming you have access to the router and know how to forward a port and your router supports hairpinning)

if you wanna play with your friend without anyone else online then you can just run the game offline via the exe in
Code: Select all
C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin\
(ProgramData is a hidden folder in windows so either enable showing hidden folders or copypaste the path into your explorer) and then use the Multiplayer-LAN mode to play with each other locally

Spoiler: show
you can use your DVD key to get a free copy of the game on steam so you don't have to buy it twice

I don't know which one of these two was causing the problem.
I will test if I have motivation.

Dear PhilipJFry,
Thank you for your suggestions, but it just works now, so we're already completely happy.
I didn't post it as a question, I just wanted to post this information for people to know how we solved this case of a DC problem.

logs would still be useful for us

assuming you use the latest (unstable) client version then you will have logs from your last few games (instead of "just" the last one) which may give us a hint about what exactly causes the problem

if it is related to the base game/code then that might be good to know

Bad news - it turned out that we didn't solve the problem. It happened in every single game today.
As you suggested, we mapped different ports in router, but the problem was not solved.
I attach the dumps:
From my side(player1): logs of 4 last games, replays of 6 last games.
From the side of the friend: log of the last game, replays of 6 last games.

I remember that last 4 games were with ports forwarded (we used 6112 and 6111). The third game (game 3) was with disabled UPnP tick in FAF. Other three were played with UPnP.

We are ready to provide further information and test things if required.

Code: Select all
C:/Users/misto/OneDrive/Документы

player2 stores maps/mods in the onedrive folder which can cause game crashes and other nasty stuff

better move the stuff to the personal folder locally and disable saving stuff on onedrive by default

Code: Select all
2018-05-06 21:43:43,829 INFO     connectivity.helper.ConnectivityHelper Connectivity state is STUN, mapped address: 212.45.15.98:62273

player2 doesn't have a mapped port

Code: Select all
2018-05-06 19:49:21,573 INFO     connectivity.helper.ConnectivityHelper Connectivity state is STUN, mapped address: 212.45.15.98:56518

player1 also doesn't have a mapped port

This is how we set port forwarding on the router. Is that incorrect?
(Our IP addresses are static)

router settings appear to be reasonable

make sure the faf client has upnp disabled if you try to use manual port mapping it and try to find out if your router supports hairpinning

also restart your router for good measure
