Unable to Create Direct 3D - error

Here's a new one. Happens when I try to create game in FAF lobby, I can still run the game offline via the executable in the FAF folder.

Error box says "Unable to create Direct 3D".

I see this line at the end of my log file (there is no "work" folder on the PC, I assume that is working directory):

I see a few anomalies when trying to start a game thru lobby.

A) Menu's are mostly unresponsive, ie Options won't display a menu unless I hit Alt TAB where upon the lobby stays on screen, and I could briefly access the menu, but it shuts within a second.

B) When I go to start a game, the popup doesn't appear on screen, I have to Alt TAB and then it appears over the lobby.

C) When I start the game, I get the 3D error. I did already upgrade video drivers before (already saw problem), that didn't solve it so posting here.

(not sure why you'd have a brewlan.scd in your install and a mod in your mod directory... seems kind of redundant to me)

This is probably a graphics setting issue (resolution or fullscreen most likely).

Try running your normal Forged Alliance (not the exe in FAF directory) and deleting all your profiles and creating a new one.

you can try to rename your game.prefs file (you can find it via the FAF client -> options -> show paths -> game.prefs)
next time you start a game of FA via FAF it will create a fresh game.prefs file (so your resolution will be reset to whatever was common in 2007 and you'll have the default keybindings etc etc)
if that fixes the bug then pls report back to us

On the BrewLAN *.scd files that is how the author made his mod to work, it has various game variations like the FAF lobby which are in those scds. I don't think they affect the game unless you select their corresponding mod though.

I think Duke of Earl was correct that it was graphics related, being Direct 3D was mentioned. I logged in to try changing graphics settings today, and there was some game update files when I started the lobby, and now it works. So I can't say for certain if it was the game files providing a fix, or changing my graphics settings - I set the desktop down to 1920x1080 and started the game, verified my game's graphics settings which will go to 4k, then started another game with the desktop at 4k. Appears to be working now. Also the game started in lobby doesn't need Alt TAB to find it.

I didn't get to the game prefs file Phillip as the problem appears solved with the update or graphics meddling.

It's still happening for me. Intermittently. I too have a 4k display so that might be the common thread between mine and Saxxon's problem. But it used to work perfectly at 4k (I always run the game at 1920x1080 for speed/legibility reasons but my desktop runs at 3840x2160) and I don't think anything in my display configuration had changed. Renaming the games.pref file didn't help. It threw up the Direct3d error message but did not create a new games.pref file.

There seems to be a bug(feature?) in the couple newest FAF clients that it somehow captures the video drivers to exclusive mode causing this to happen if your FAF client is maximized(fullscreen) and you are trying to start the game in fullscreen mode also.

So just make sure your FAF client is not fullscreen and it should go away for now.

Oh! Right. I did think it was related to the client because it only started happening recently. I had figured a way to bypass it by reducing the resolution then setting it back to full resolution (which has the effect of reducing the FAF client window size). Now I understand why. What a strange bug though.
